Pricing - How Much Should I Charge?
Aidanforsyth0 replied to Aidanforsyth0's topic in How Do I Do That?
The end game for me here is not a veg tan wallet. I plan on ordering some really high quality French calf and baby calf for the interior, so obviously not looking to hit that $85 price point where I hit now with some of my other products. I'm really looking to move up to more luxurious items. I'll be making more prototypes and tweaks and will keep you guys updated. Thanks a lot!! The end game for me here is not a veg tan wallet. Pricing - How Much Should I Charge?

My creaser is on the way! The thread is 632, 10 spi. I agree Horween isn't for fine European style goods but the exception to me is shell cordovan which I'm getting shortly. What creaser do you use? Thanks for the advice -
Pricing - How Much Should I Charge?
Aidanforsyth0 replied to Aidanforsyth0's topic in How Do I Do That?
The everyday consumer doesn't justify what they pay off of a formula of material cost , labor , etc. I figured I'd ask what people would pay not what my calculated cost to make a profit would be. I can include material costs and labor of necessiry -
Hey there. So recently I have started to switch from crafting "american style" wallets ( thicker thread, more rugged, less refined look) to crafting more european style higher quality wallets (thinner thread, painted edges,etc.). The exterior of this wallet is made from Horween "North of Cordovan" chromexcel horse strips (although I plan to make a very similar designed wallet with the exterior in real cordovan once I get my shipment tomorrow), and the interior is made from vegetable tanned leather. The thread is Fil Au Chinois for those who care and the edges are painted and sealed. The whole wallet is hand stitched (saddle stitched). I'm not including material costs at this time. I'd like to ask you what you think its worth based off of the quality of the item rather than a calculated wholesale / retail formula. Thanks so much for looking PICTURES : http://imgur.com/a/HmdHC - Aidan

How Many Prototypes Do You Make Till It Is Sellable?
Aidanforsyth0 replied to DavidL's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
With wallets I usually get it on the first try with very slight modifications afterwards. Usually I make a customers custom order and then tweak it from there and list it on my site. With other items like bracelets I have made numerous prototypes but have yet to post one because I just haven't gotten it to my liking. -

First Wallet Ever

Really great stitching for your first attempt. I'd definitely try moving the thread closer to the edge and eventually order higher quality leather. Try maverick leather as they sell good quality leather for cheap - great for practice. I'm not affiliated with them just love their leather for some pieces and practice -

What's the SPI on that? Nice stitching -
Another Card Wallet

Nice! I like it. One question I have is have you ever thought of using a wing divider instead of a groover to lay the stitching? Different look -
That's right folks, title says it all. I've realized that something that seems so simple in the beginning of leather working can turn very complicated, and I like that. My question to you is what is the most efficient and precise tool/method to punch holes? Check out someone like faler brands work to see what I'm talking about http://falerbrand.tumblr.com If you run Faler and see this you do great work, good job. What're your thoughts on the method of using a pricking wheel->punch out all holes with an awl-> then stitch all holes? I've used a pricking iron and have hammered out all of the holes and it's worked fine because I use thicker thread but I'm switching to .6 mm and I need the holes I punch to be smaller. Share your TECHNIQUES!! Thanks guys

Hello again. I'm wondering if you have any recommendations for leather for wallets that can be burnished to a very clean look, and that has a relatively tight grain so the wallet feels of top quality. I've been using strictly Chromexcel and the edges have not been up to my standards. One fingernail scratch and the wallet looks used. I'm looking for something more clean, and that looks more "high quality." Please give me any and all suggestions! Also a note to anyone who likes Chromexcel but has the same problems as me: use horsehide strips! Burnishes great and feels more firm BUT the reason I can't solely rely on it is because it only comes in two colors! (brown / black). I look forward to seeing your recommendations. Thanks in advance

I have bought some from buckle guy and they're great. Ive ordered other items from abbey england and they have been good as well. I'd go with buckle guy

I brand my products with an ink stamp. I mainly sell wallets and it works great to stick my logo (1" x 2") on the flesh side of the leather. I figure it helps remind people where their product came from.

Which photo are you referring to? The guys at Horween have checked out my site and it hasn't been a problem. Thanks for your feedback. I definitely think finishing the edges and sealing the belts would add value. Those were just a few prototypes I thought I'd test the market with. Stitching instead of the snaps?
