I think you can use any number between 1 and infinity. I know some that use one but the string has to be so long it would drive me nuts working with it.

You want to turn the braid back on it's self and interweave the ends with the previously braided stuff. I would generally then cover that part with a button. Look at how this tells to make the handle for a leash. That looks like the whole lead is 4 strand. So you would use 4 separate strands instead of 2 double long. Start braiding far enough down from the end to give yourself enough to use for the back braid. It works just like it does for the handle loop.

Not sure I completely understand your question. If you just want to have a loop at both ends you could do a couple of things. One would be to start at the dog end of the lead braiding 4 strands until you have enough for the size loop you want. Then bring the ends together into 8 strands and back braid the handle. The other would be to just back braid loops at both ends.

Lard is rendered pork fat. Crisco is a vegetable shortening. Tallow would be rendered beef fat.

The Hansen cutter uses injector blades for the cutting and beveling. The splitter has blade you sharpen that looks kinda like a planner blade. You can find out about ordering one from http://www.hansenstringcutter.com/

Depends on what exactly you want to do. Or my preferred method would be to use half as many strands as you intend to braid twice as long and braid the loop and join it. So you would start in the middle with say 4 strands for a distance enough to make an eye. Then bring the braid together into a 8 strand braid.

I've just used it on reatas, but you could likely use it like soap? Get some nice white beef fat like the kidney fat and render it down to tallow. I didn't add anything to it other than the rendered fat.
