  1.   Very nice work like always.
  2. Bruce Grant's "Encyclopedia of Rawhide and Leather Braiding" isn't the easiest but it is likely the most complete. Robert L. Woolery's Braiding Rawhide Horse Tack is excelent Knothead's (Brian) website has lots of online tutorials too http://www.khww.net/viewpage.php?page_id=25

    Nose Button

I think you can use any number between 1 and infinity. I know some that use one but the string has to be so long it would drive me nuts working with it.

    Help With Braid

You want to turn the braid back on it's self and interweave the ends with the previously braided stuff. I would generally then cover that part with a button. Look at how this tells to make the handle for a leash. Just use a smaller loop. http://myriam.dakotabraiding.com/Tutorials/Leash/Leash.html Or you could make a terminal knot in the end that you braid around your ring. http://leatherworker.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=19613&hl=%2Bterminal+%2Bknot
  5. I don't recall seeing a tutorial on quirts. Grant's book covers a type or two of them though.
  6. :clapping: That should buy a few nice dinners.
  7. So is that table empty now?
  8. That looks like the whole lead is 4 strand. So you would use 4 separate strands instead of 2 double long. Start braiding far enough down from the end to give yourself enough to use for the back braid. It works just like it does for the handle loop.
  9. Not sure I completely understand your question. If you just want to have a loop at both ends you could do a couple of things. One would be to start at the dog end of the lead braiding 4 strands until you have enough for the size loop you want. Then bring the ends together into 8 strands and back braid the handle. The other would be to just back braid loops at both ends.
  10. Don't you know Bret is a braiding MACHINE!
  11. I think it is just a hide from a black skinned cow.
  12. What do you get if you go over 2 under 2 over 2?

    Leather Grease

Lard is rendered pork fat. Crisco is a vegetable shortening. Tallow would be rendered beef fat.
  14. The Hansen cutter uses injector blades for the cutting and beveling. The splitter has blade you sharpen that looks kinda like a planner blade. You can find out about ordering one from http://www.hansenstringcutter.com/
  15. Very cool! How does it lock shut or do you just hold pressure on with your foot when using it?
  16. I just notice you are in Bell Fourche, any chance you know my friend over in Red Owl, Robert Dennis?
  17. Doesn't look like you forgot anything. Very nice work.
  18. Depends on what exactly you want to do. If you just want the braid to stop you can do a terminal knot (and cover it with pineapple or gaucho knot) http://leatherworker.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=19613&hl=%2Bterminal+%2Bknot To attache to a ring I would either backbraid a loop around it and cover the splice. Or my preferred method would be to use half as many strands as you intend to braid twice as long and braid the loop and join it. So you would start in the middle with say 4 strands for a distance enough to make an eye. Then bring the braid together into a 8 strand braid.
  19. Bruce Sandifer will be holding a roping event this coming February in Santa Ynez. In addition to the roping he plans to have a trade show including spade bit maker and braiding competition. Bruce is himself an accomplished braider. I don't know if I will enter any braiding but certainly intend to rope and ride in the stock horse events. http://californiobridlehorseassociation.com/code-3/code-4/index.html
  20. I've just used it on reatas, but you could likely use it like soap? Get some nice white beef fat like the kidney fat and render it down to tallow. I didn't add anything to it other than the rendered fat.
