  1. Tooling generally depends on compressing some of the thickness of the leather to make the pattern. So ! the thinner the leather the less it will tool. If you go thin you can push from the underside to make the tooling more 3D. To make the pattern last you can fill the back !!
  2. looks like horizontal blade adjustment problem. Find some gash leather the thickness you want to thin then adjust the blade contour and feed. check then readjust.

nice blade and the sheath is well thought out. May be worth using a matching thread colour until you perfect stiching. What did you make the blade from ??
  4. I am planning on retirement but I always had leatherwork in reserve as you are correct that some people go stir crazy when they retire. I remember my first kit in the 70's but once I tried 3mm + leather the patterns really become 3D. Keep at it you will be amazed what you can do.
  5. And when machine sewing leather you need a different needle shape to sewing man made fibre. For leather the needle is diamond shaped and sharp to cut through the leather. With man made material the needle is round and pushes the fabric aside. You could do worse than hand stitch these last bits.
  6. That has come out really well was their enough pink for the customer. You did like that basket weave tool didn't you !
  7. very neat stitching and was the goat skin pre dyed ??
  8. Thanks for sharing that. I have spent a lot of time looking for a sealant that is not toxic.
  9. you may be able to add a horse shoe of leather which will form the base of your saddle using strips of leather.
  10. I respect you sticking to hand sewing, the main reason I moved to a basic singer was that I was running a business. I found my machine would stich up to 5mm of leather which would save me a vast amount of time when lining belts or making bag inserts. I enjoy hand stitching a lot..
  11. I was thinking the same that you need to take a thin outer layer of your wheel using a coarse carborundum stone but carefully.
  12. I found the problem was what you lined them with, I then looked for and found an 1800's recipe but wondered what you are using. ??
  13. You should worry we are not even allowed to own a hand gun in the UK. A few years ago I made a holster for a 45 magnum and I admit I was quite worried about having it in my shop.
  14. I see you have done some clothes before as this is really good. I have done similar but I use a really basic Singer machine for this thickness of leather. Once you have used a machine for thin leather and clothes you will never go back. I still hand stitch my veg tanned leather and am proud of the results.
  15. Did you trace the pattern then cut and create the relief from the front then work from the back ?? I like where you are going with this. Did you fill the voids in the back of the leather ??

I have tried wet moulding and have found the leather shrinks about 10%. You have managed some very neat corners did you use a male and female mould or just work it over a male one. Nice job !
  17. Hi I am in Brighton way down south. I have a lot of info that I want to share as I really enjoy leatherwork, and cars, and bikes, especially big bikes, and knives, and swords, and music and on.
  18. Please send it back ! splits are not hides suitable for tooling. They are generally used for clothes.
  19. Would be happy to quote but cant seem to open the links ???
  20. A bombard is a leather Jug that the beer comes in before you pour it into the tankards. The most difficult part I found was to seal the inside. I did find a recipe from the 1800's it included how to make leather black naturally !!.
  21. Hi Joseph B Upholstery is an area I have tried but It is an art in itself. The amount of over cut or undercut to get the stitch line lying in the best place is something you will only learn by experience or having a good teacher on hand. It is such a deep subject keep at it. Pkay
  22. Hi and welcome. did you make the Bombard ??
  23. I did wear it with pride until during a visit to the doctors he suggested I cut down !! I don't smoke and wondered what others were thinking when they saw my brown fingers. Also concerned about what affect the dye on my hand could have on my wife ;-)
  24. First few sheathes I made were stitched through two pieces of hide but the knife blade cut through the stitching !! Next better efforts used a strip of leather which went between the two layers of hide protecting the stitching form the blade. Then I tried rivets but thought they may harm/blunt the blade.
