My First Leather Rifle Sling
Otto6294 replied to leaky5's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
I like the black.....Cool texture. -
I took an old little league baseball.... dirt, grass stains and all and cut the cover off. I put this lady's boys names on it and their numbers on both sides. Hand stitched the piece of ball cover on and tooled around it. Looks old and worn and she loves it. Did you know baseballs are sewn with cotton thread and it is difficult to keep it from unraveling all over the place. Superglue can be your friend. Otto

How do you get such deep relief....Is it a thin leather laminated to heavier leather? Beautiful work.

Small Scout Sheath I Made For A Friend.
Otto6294 replied to Otto6294's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Thanks Rohn.....The first prototype sucked and I discarded it. On this one, the belt loops are extensions of the front and the retaining strap is part of the back and both are lined with 4/5 oz and a full welt all the way around.. Could have used line 20 snaps, but I wanted them beefier. Not a lot of real estate on the front of that small sheath. -
My First Real Completed Project
Otto6294 replied to Dorak's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
That is nifty and I will be making one of those. -
I started this a couple weeks ago. Made the pattern out of poster board. 8/9 oz veg tan laminated to 4/5 oz veg tan backing. I have the holster face and knife sheath completed and ready to stitch to the leather harness. Trying to carry the inlaid alligator print design over to the harness surface....that was a lot of tooling. It took the dye really nicely. You cane see where the holster front and knife will be mounted. I was going to do bullet loops. but I don't want to cover up the tooling. I may make a removeable cartidge carrier for the strap. Thanks for looking. Otto

Nice.....I'm getting ready to do some bullet loops on a shoulder rig.....would 4/5 oz be alright for that? -
Sig 238 Range Holster
Otto6294 replied to Otto6294's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
1/16ths drill bit followed by a good sized awl. Back doesn't look to bad, I tried to hold the drill as straight as I could. I don't have a drill press. I need to get a small one. -
My daughter wanted a simple holster to put her gun in. This is my first inlay. I got the alligator print from an old purse. Some mistakes. My maker's mark nearly disappeared when I water molded the gun to the holster, so I put it on the belt strap. It is very chunky....has a sight rib welt. 4oz+8oz+4oz+8 oz+4oz+8oz= 36oz thick on the edges. I measure 11/16 of an inch. Friction fit. The mag release area was recessed by wet forming with a small scrap of leather tucked in that area. Sturdy little holster and the gun looks good in it. I have not edge coated or sprayed it yet.

A Couple Of New Wallets
Otto6294 replied to jayjay's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
I like that skull layout/design a lot. Nice work. -
This took me several evenings and I just received my maker's stamp in the mail yesterday. This is 8/9 oz laminated to 4/5 oz veg tan. 2 coats of antique tan gel. I haven't decided on the finish yet. Resolene, Spray sheen or beeswax/neetsfoot mixture. I wet molded the holster to the gun and it is a great fit. Probably spent way too much time on the back connector but it turned out cool. I am learning....after tooling the straps, they grew like an inch and a half and I had to re-cut them.

New Sheath For My Khukuri
Otto6294 replied to Otto6294's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Nope.....just rake both straps back with the spine of the blade and slide it in. Way better than wrestling with the one that came with it. The original is a wood sheath wrapped in leather and very tight. -
I made this last week....no tooling...utilitarian. . I also went and got 3 10' 2 x 8s and built a sturdy pounding table because my long table was loud and bouncy. And I installed a servo motor on my 16-188 singer.....busy week.

Tightening And Loosing Chicago Screws
Otto6294 replied to bushpilotmexico's topic in How Do I Do That?
I use whatever I can find. If you are in a humid environment, I would use brass or stainless. I used the nickel plated steel ones I believe. I rummaged through the hardware store and found them. -

You can put a tiny star washer under the female side that get pulled into the leather. I have cut some tiny ridged into them with a dremel also. I have also had to cut a screwdriver slot into the back to remove old ones and replace them. -
That was what was written on the tag. False advertisement abounds.

Not integrated. There is air space between the disk and pulley. I wish there was room to simply put another pulley on the shaft so the clutch could still engage the large pulley.
-
I think I will leave it alone. The guy that owned it used only 138. It sews flawlessly with it, but it is to fast for me. I have not measured it, but the pulley is huge. Like 4 or 5 inches. I need to put a smaller pulley on it or just break down and buy the servo motor. It has a newer 1/2 horse clutch motor. I'll just have to buy a bigger machine to do the large stuff. I plan on buying a 441 of some kind this summer. I don't sell stuff.....just playing right now. Thanks. Otto Can I just buy a 2 inch pulley of the right shaft diameter? And a longer belt.

How much 207 thread will the bobbin hold? Do I have to change a bunch of settings?

Ruger Vaquero Holster And Belt
Otto6294 replied to Otto6294's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
I am a little sad every time I take a life, but I use every bit of the animal I can. My wife and daughters love venison, The local game warden has tanned a few hides for me. My Dad turns 76 in May and we have bow hunted every year since 1981. I'll not argue with anyone about this, but to an animal rights activist, this sight is indeed a photo gallery of all things killed. Otto
