I just made one last week and used it last night. I only had a skillsaw to use, so it didn't have the "precision" that a table/mitre saw would have had. The result? My jaws didn't meet exactly. Meaning, I've got a little gap in there that I can't tighten down (one side only). All the above said, I used it last night to sew a project and it works as you described. Just a little loose.

I'm sure someone will chime in. However, weaver leather supply is right in your back yard...I'm in N Canton about once a month (I work for Timken) and have yet to go to weaver...

Doesn't look like snake to me...not many of the pics have belly scales..,the one pic with the pen looks like belly scales, but it looks like it would have to be an awfully big (in diameter) snake comparing the size with the belly scales seen.

Thanks for the reply Thor. Yeah, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The cuts appear to be superficial, and may actually even be cracks. The scratches aren't deep, but not sure if they show up after a dye application? I'm not sending back, nor do I think it's even worth a call to SLC. I just wanted to reach out and see what others say...again, since this is my first purchase, I was just wondering. I'm still going to use it up! If nothing else, I'll have a crapload of keyfobs!!

So, I just got my order in from Springfield. This is my first order and my first look at "real" leather in it's "raw" form. In my order, I got a 2lb bag of scraps for practice stuff. I also got a single shoulder of HO 3/4oz (~6 sqft). Lastly, I got a santé fe double shoulder (~14 sqft). The scraps were just that. I wasn't expecting much of anything there. The HO looks real good and consistent all the way through. No big issues with anything...However, the santé fe double that I got is another story...the "center" portion looks ok to me. However, there's one area with cuts in it and another area with scratches on it. probably about a sq ft each. Now, since this is my first buy of leather, trying to determine what is acceptable and what is not and worth a call to a supplier (not just SLC for example). Thanks, Kevin

Art, Thanks for the response...sent you a message directly... I've watched nearly all of Ian and Nigel's videos (all of Nigel's). One thing I didn't add in here was I am going to purchase a drill press or a bench grinder and a burnishing wheel/sanding wheel for finishing.

Thanks for the suggestion calait but I can get a slab from Springfield for $10.

Well, the wife got on my butt last night for over analyzing everything I do. She told me to just order the stuff. So...my first projects are going to be a double thickness gun belt, a "dress/knock around" belt, a wallet and a holster. I need to know which leather would be good. I don't mind buying a whole side if it would be better, or perhaps by the sq ft from Springfield. I know the holster/belt could be the same (8/9 oz leather), but the wallet would be thinner, so perhaps that would be by the sq ft. Below is what I'm thinking I'll need in terms of tools to get started...all construction tools, no "tooling" tools just yet. Maul - gonna splurge on a nice Barry King to begin with...a 1lb I'm guessing Knife - most likely will be a stanley type until I can figure out if I want to get a head/round knife from Barry Johnson granite slab - I live in an area of the country that doesn't have a counter shop nearby or anything on craigslist poundo board #3 edge beveler wing divider saddler's groover 1" oblong punch (for belt slot for the buckle) stitching irons - gonna go with the finesse ones from springfield and find some 8 or 9 spi ones from goodsjapan or leathercraft tools for the wallet dye(s) thread needles wool daubers strap cutter oval punch for belt holes hole punch for chicago screws stitching awl scratch awl buckles for belt chicago screws As for burnishing stuff, I'm going to pick up a drill press. Then, I'm going to head over to leatherburnishers.com or proedgeburnishers.com and grab some burnishers and sanding drums. What am I missing? Am going to make the order tomorrow with springfield and (possibly) others. Thanks, Kevin
-
Not sure if this is the right place to post or not, but if not, please move. Want to get a drill press to be able to attach a sanding drum to in order to help smooth edges as well as (maybe) burnishing. Also, want to get a benchtop grinder for the same purpose. Question(s): 1) what should I be looking at in terms of RPMs for the tools? 2) for those of you that have both, are both necessary, or am I just wasting money and can accomplish each task on either? Thanks, Kevin

Matt, I requested one, but haven't received it yet (unless it came in the mail today...). Still need my info? And no worries...just get it out when you can. No need to apologize to me! Kevin

Kinda off topic, but wondering if anyone has physically been to weaver leather. I'm in canton Ohio this week on business and wanted to stop by there this afternoon. -
Alcohol/spirit Lamp/burner For Heating Leather Crease Tools?
smirak replied to Tannin's topic in Leather Tools
I grew up on about 4000 acres in central Mississippi that was family land for quite a while (~200 yrs). We canned everything from meat to vegetables. We used all kinds of jars, but to set the record straight... Kerr Jars Alexander H. Kerr founded the Hermetic Fruit Jar Company in 1903 and among the first commercial; products were the Economy and Self Sealing jars. The Economy jars were among the first wide-mouth jars, and thus, were easy to fill. They also incorporated aspects from two 1903 patents held by another inventor, Julius Landsberger: a metal lid with a permanently attached gasket. This made the lids easy to use and inexpensive. Mr. Kerr later (1915) invented a smaller, flat metal disk with the same permanent composition gasket. The lid sealed on the top of a mason jar; a threaded metal ring held the lid down during the hot water processing. This allowed re-use of old canning jars together with inexpensive and easy to use disposable lids. The jar we know today was born! This two-part lid system transformed home canning safety and is still in use today. Kerr also made the first wide-mouth jars, which Ball was quick to duplicate. -

I don't know anything about making a saddle, but I did grow up riding. However, I just want to come drink whiskey! -
SLC isn't labeling it anything but distance between holes. The Japanese irons I see are labeled "2mmx4mm" where 2mm is the length of the slit/hole and 4 mm is the distance between holes. SLC is labeling theirs as distance between holes, not whole "width"
-
OK...maybe I'm stupid...but someone help explain it to me... The 1/8 chisels (88045 series) is 1/8" spacing between holes. Which means you would get 9 holes in 1 inch. A stitch between each hole, meaning 8 spi. Is that correct? Reason I ask is that Springfield just got some new chisels in that are identical to the Tandy ones, though have diff pns and are silver instead of black. Asked Kevin at SLC and he said none of the 3/32, 1/8, or 5/32 will give 8spi. o|o|o|o|o|o|o|o|o = 1 inch o - hole | - stitch Does my rudimentary "drawing" make sense? Kevin
-
Thanks all. I do like the springfield ones, but I want a chisel with 8spi as well. Looks like I'll be looking at/for the Japanese ones also. For the ~6 spi, the finesse ones from Springfield will be hard to beat though.
-
First off, I googled and searched here, but came up empty. I've watched all of Nigel's videos on stitching chisels too... Looking at the Pro Line Diamond Stitching chisels that Tandy sells...(88044/45/46) series. They advertise as 3/32 (2.3mm), 1/8 (3.1mm) and 5/32 (3.9mm) chisels. Can someone tell me the SPI you get with these? I looked online and some sites said use 25.4/x to get the SPI. If I do that, I get 11, 8, 6.5 (roughly) from the above measurements. I don't believe that is true. I believe the chisels are more in the 8, 7, 6 range. Can someone that has these chisels confirm for me please? Thanks, Kevin

Not machinery or leather related, but triflow is all I use on my tri bike as well as my road bike. I've used it in all conditions from rain, snow, sleet, mud, hot sun, etc and it hasn't let me down yet!
