Belts For Kids
Shorts replied to Shorts's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Thanks for the link On the belt did you keep it a single layer 5/6oz? One of the boys like to do it right when he wears his hat and boots to go to the farm so if there's room I might do some stitching. Maybe carve or imprint names on bracelets for the girls. -
I want to make a couple belts for my friends kids. They're about kindergarten age at the oldest right now. What width do kids jeans have? Also what weigh should I make the straps? I need to grab so hardware too. Anyone done anything like this that can offer some advice before I get started? I'm use to making belts for the big boys - thanks!

Just wanted to update. Yesterday I finally bolted down the press to my workbench. That has taken care of the slightly crooked snap that I show pictured in my first post. So, rest assured you can get a quality install of snaps using this method. ok, yall have a good week.

Thanks!

Rayban, nice work. I can squirrel together a piece of 1/2" square stock and some strap(no machinist nearby). Can you show how the magnets are placed under there? This is good stuff yall. Looks like I might be able to do some stamping afterall

Kooky Question On Leather Pistol Grips
Shorts replied to Fredo's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
I have. It was actually my first project. They came out like crap. First project with leather, ever. Of course they came out like crap. It can probably be done, just make your considerations. - probably want a thin, hard backing of some time. Keeps the leather off the frame and from collecting moisture and particles. Of course, any gun should have grips removed so you can clean under there regularly. - probably should stiffen up grip screw holes so yanking on the grip doesn't wallow out the leather. You'll need a firm ridge that the grip screw head can secure. The way I'd make them now is use a thin piece over a thinned wood grip. Instead of what I tried then was a whole piece of 7/8oz as the grip panel. Edit - I see you've already got them done. I've been meaning to do the same to match my wallet. -
I think we've all made reasons and kept putting off purchasing a stitching machine. They do take a bit of an investment so it's not a decision to take lightly though. Glad you got your new toy...I mean, tool I remember the day my Cobra arrived. All the adrenalin of the excitement helped me and my husband carry that beast upstairs to my work room.

Boos is here. I figured you made a run to the liquor store. I get excited about new beverages myself. Enjoy the new boos

Lack of maintaining properly functioning SD equipment is no excuse. That ain't no AD either. That's a ND. The darker areas are contact, the regular brown leather was where there was no contact. This holster was on its way out for a while but this guy neglected to replace it. He even admits it.... Anyway, I think he screwed up and he knows it. Which may explain why he's not making (at this pint) any attempt at Galco.

Rayban, about the sleeve, that's what I'm planning on as well for different sized tools. Haven't put it into actual practice yet but worth a shot.

Yes that press will be a bit overkill. I think it'd be cumbersome to use and a little less precise for smaller items. Bump up the jack to at least a 10T or 12T, add some press plates and you can use it as a clicker.
-
1T is more than enough for snaps. I think the 1/2T would do the job just fine and be a few less bucks. I've got a 1T arbor press I just put together and it's working fine. In this honeymoon phase of using it I've got a few new ideas in my head about converting tools/punches to fit the center hole of the ram. I'll be transitioning my makers stamp over to that as well. Right now I use the vise. You definitely need to bolt or clamp the arbor press to the bench top. Otherwise it will tip forward at the vital point you pull the handle to make the impression on the item. I've got mine temporarily clamped but I'll be bolting it down this weekend. Treereaper, I figure on doing a little stamping with the press. Glad to see the concept go to fruition.

You're welcome! You're welcome too! The force can be regulated since it is just hand crank. I might put some indicator marks somewhere once I find them. I agree. In fact, it's what I did with the hammer and punch in order to try to keep things straight. Your suggestion immediately made me think of an old hand cranked screw press. I had to look up a chain rivet spinner but looks like it would do the job.

First run through with the press. Rollover is a bit off center and a hint flat ("too much power captain!"). I attribute the flat rollover to my muscles (though could be the 1T capacity of the press). I need to find the sweet spot. The offcenter is probably my technique but I'm really pinning it on the nonsymmetrical, offcenter nature of the setter punch tip itself. I've inspected closely and it isn't perfectly round. Quick spin on a lathe would sort it right out. I'm only working with one arm so really any tool that changes a swing the hammer/punch method to a press method is an upgrade.

I had been look for a line 24 snap press for a little bit. I got a great suggestion from Sharpshooter here on the forum to adapt an arbor press. So, I purchased a 1T arbor press from Northern Tool for ~$69, drilled the arbor ram and adapted the current cheapo line 24 setter punch to do the job. 1T arbor press, cleaned up and degreased Arbor holes drilled, one tapped, measuring setter punch Cutting setter punch to length Smooth off the edge and round it out Insert setter punch into ram rod and snug with set screw. Final product. I swapped the swiveling base plate with one of my smaller press plates for stability.
