  10. Hi Richard, First let me say that your purses are very nice for someone just starting out. I like the pattern with the oak leave and the Dogwood flowers. So I hope you do not mind but I amde up a pattern from the photo you supplied and changed it a bit here and there and then carved it in leather. Forgive my French as it rather sucks! As Bryan noted, you need work on the backgrounding. Practice on some scrap leather until it feels comfortable. While I think that a pattern is not unlike sheet music and everyone plays it differently there are usually common approaches to stamping. I will cut the pattern with a swivel knife and then I use my Pear Shaders. After that I use an Undercut Beveler followed by my Smooth Bevelers. Then the Flower Center or Seeders and Stops inside the flowers. I then use a hair Blade on the leaf stems and ad my decorative cuts. Last I will do my backgrounding. You need to try and feather out your pear shader as you walk it slowly forward. Use a modeling tool to smooth out the areas that do not feel right. I like the pattern and as I have not seen it before feel you must have created it yourself. Attached is my version of your pattern. All The Best, Storm

  14. Hi Steve, I have thought of that but it would be like the last supper of rock and roll. It would be a fair chunk of change and most people don't want to pay what a things worth anyway. I might do it for a few K. I will think about it though. I need to think about an older Mick. HA! For crying out loud Keith turned 66 this December 18th. LOL! Thanx, Storm
  15. Hey Bro, After you have beveled a cut you will notice that the leather rises up and away from the cut you just beveled. By using a smooth or lightly checked matting tool you are flattening out that one sided valley; helping to increase the feeling of depth and making the carving look like it is laying flush to the leather. Gives it that stand alone feel. For figure carving Tandy once had the F995 and F996. These are both smooth matting tools and very helpful with figure carving. They have been dicontinued by Tandy...once again their reasoning fails me, but the still have a checkered patterned one, the F901. You can still find F995s out there but I have also created one for a large nail prior to getting the real deal. Some have even purchased the F901 and carefully ground the face down to achieve a tool similar to the larger F996. Considering that the F901 is on sale right now at $3.33 it is worth trying to smooth it out. Hope you found this helpful. Storm

The clisk on the Choose... buttoen and the navigate yourself to your desk top and select the image and hit the open button and then once you return to your topic hit the "Attach This File button and it will then load it up. Bouncing?

I had problems before similarto yours. First you need a good solid bench or desk top. Second a big thick slab of marble or granite. Third I don't us backing like X-Ray fim and rubber cement. I take my bone dry leather and apply wide strips of clear Scotch Long Lasting Storage Tape. I will use a roler or a spoon to burnish it down. When I moisten the leather I use a sponge and use only enough water to get the job done. Then let your project dry completely before you pull off the tape. You want to pull the tape off the leather rather than trying to pull the leather off the tape. These are just guide lines and with time you may come up with techniques of your own. I always had problems with the rubber cement adhering to the flesh side of the leather. Sometimes you have to experiment to find out what best works for you. Good luck! Storm
