Wet Form Knife Sheath & Welt Question
ChiefFilipino replied to ChiefFilipino's topic in How Do I Do That?
Thank you Rawcustom and Kiwican! 1961Mike I'd love to see some photos when you are finished and to find out how it turned out. -
man that's too bad. There were actually some pretty thick pieces in the deer skin remnants that I used because these puppies are going to see a lot of abuse. Nice guitars by the way!

Those are nice! Mine are made of deer skin remnants and so far I have sweated in them but they haven't gotten soaked in water. Hopefully mine will be ok. I put resolene on the outside so hopefully that will help. Are yours deer skin?

Nice job. Keep at it! -
Secondly, if I were to sew a soft bag, like a pouch, would using the sticky-wax route for a strong stitch be the best route or would that possibly make the seam too stiff for a soft bag (like a belt pouch sort of thing). I have also just begun leather working and I have found that contact cement is flexible and rubbery. It does make it a touch stiffer, I guess I would describe it as more rubbery. I am not anywhere near an expert but I have hand stitched a few things together without cementing them. It took me a long time but to hold it together I used binder clips. Hope that helps.

Wet Form Knife Sheath & Welt Question
ChiefFilipino replied to ChiefFilipino's topic in How Do I Do That?
Thanks for the replies! That makes sense to take it all the way to the top I didn't think about drawing the knife out and putting it back in. -
Here is a picture of the leather I am going to use to try my hand at wet forming a knife sheath. The question I have though is about the welt. I tried to show the welt I have already cut but then I'm not sure about the length. Will this welt be sufficient or do I need to take the welt all the way up to the top of the sheath. My understanding of a welt is to protect the stitches from the blade, so will this length be sufficient? Thanks!

Ok, I still haven't figured my way around the forum but I did find the gallery section. I put all my photos in the gallery titled First Leather Projects if you are interested in checking it out. Feedback is needed, requested, and appreciated!

My first (horrible) attempt at tooling leather. I didn't have a beveler, all I had was a modeling spoon. I thought I could get away with it but my skills are not there yet. -

I had to round out the edges at the top because the square edges kept catching my pocket and pulling it inside out. -

Predyed goat skin wallet. I got the goat skin already colored and just cut pieces out to make the wallet. I screwed up on measuring the top so I had to add a little trapezoidal flap to the top to protect my cards a little. Not the greatest work but I'm happy with it. -

Here I am with my tabi and kyahan on. They work really well! Also notice the leather patches on my gi pants, it looks horrible but I'm going for functionality not looks. I put all this through some rough abuse! -

I had to sew the sole on because there were gaps when I cemented the soles onto the tabi. Lesson learned, but still haven't figured out the process to make these high quality. -

Here are the finished tabi. They are dusty because I've already put them to use! -
