Help With Getting Started
rccolt45 replied to CodeJockey's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Basicly its trial an error. More error than you will be happy with. Take the gun and lay it down on a pice of graph paper. The trace the gun on the paper. Next lay out your belt line on the graph paper so you can tell where on the belt it will ride. Next draw your holster around the picture of the gun you just drew. When you are happy with what you have cut out the holster your just drew. Now take that first patter and transfer it to a piece of card board. Cut out the card board. Next take a hammer and break down the honey combs inside the card board and tape the whole thing together. This will be close to the thickness of the leather you will be using. If the gun first your card board holster then use the card board holster pattern to cut your leather. If not try again but leave alittle more room when you are drawing out your holster. -

thanks Kate - I am not familiar with any of those, which one do you think works best and where can I get some? -
Ok this is not my first holster, but it is the first one I think is even close to good enough to share. It is made for a Colt Commander using 6/7 oz and Anglus dye and super sheen sealer. It is hand stiched and I do not have a boneing press. Please give me all the feed back you can both good and bad. A big thank you to LOBO for all his help!!!

IWB holster question
rccolt45 replied to rccolt45's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Feel my pain. I finally made a IWB that I was happy enoug to pust pics. The last step was to add fore and aft belt loops with line 24 pull the dot snaps. I was using 6/7 oz leather for body and 5/6 for loops. 5/16 inch snap posts. I even thined the loops like LOBO suggested. So I get out the old mallet and set the snaps. So far so good. First time I snap them it still looking good. The I unsnap them and bam the post and female part lets go. Now I have a IWB with a post sewed in and no snap. SOB. So I guess I haveto go thinner on my leather. What do you guy suggest? -

Thanks Lobo, stupid question - is a T nut like a chicago screw? If not do you happen to have a pic of one? -
I am building a IWB. The body will be 6/7oz and the throat band will br 5/60z. I plan on using belt loops with snaps. Can you guys give me advise on how best to locate and attach the loops. I am not really sure what type or lenth of snaps to use.

My 5th holster

Hey Boomstick, when do you heat the leather in an overn to stiffen it? Before you dye or after? -
I have been using eco flow with so-so results. I want to try Angelus dyes based on this forum saying how good it is. I went to order some from turtlefeathers and saw that they strongly recommend a preparer deglazer. What is this and is it really needed? Also do you guys who se Angelus dilute it with anything or do you use it right from the bottle. Also are you all dipping or applying with wool daubers? thanks

Why do they sell a seperate tool for line 24 1/4" inch post snaps than for standard line 24 inch snaps? any idea
-
Hi guys, I am trying to build a IWB holster with belt loops that snap. I am using 8/90z leather for the holster body and 7/8 leather for the holster belt loops. I have a few pull the dot snaps and the posts don't seem long enough. What length post should I be using. Also I am trying to hand set them with a simple anvil and setter that I got at tandy and have used on regular none pull the dot snaps but it doesn't seem to be working right with the pull the dot snaps. Do I need a special tool to set the pull the dots? any help would be much apperciated. thanks

Holster Dye procedure
rccolt45 replied to rccolt45's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
When you say finish up with an air brush - could you please describe that prcodue to me? I looked at your web site and your stuff look just great. I wish I could get my finishs like that. thanks Rob -
Hey guys, I have started to get pretty good at making holsters but am still not happy with the dying process. I have mainly stayed with Tandy dye the eco all in one stuff. I am not happy with the results. Its very streakie. Is it the leather or the process. right now I am basicly painting it on as it comes from the bottle with a foam brush. What am I doing wrong? also should I start thinking about a spray set up? any advice on how to do ti and what to use would be great.
