Hi guys, I am looking to jump up to something better then the leather they sell at my local Tandy store. Can anyone suggest a good web store to buy tanned leather sides for making holsters that is not crazy expensive that I can keep learning on and refining my stuff?

ok thanks for the info. If I understand resilyn is a product used after dying to lock in the dye - I am using super shine now I guesse it is the same thing. As to vinegaroon - thats good info but not what I will be using - thanks - don't need to open that can of worms. As to flash effect I agree it is not the flash. I have owned some custom holsters from Matt delfatti and sparks and they are all very shinny. One last question I see some people waxing after the dye -what is the point of this? -
Hi guys, I am new to holster making (about 6 months). So far everything I have done has not been worth posting. But with your help I have actually made one that might be worth showing off. I am in the last steps and need to dye it. My question for you is what steps are involved so get the shinny affect that you see? If the past I have tried the Tandy eco water based stuff and it comes out nice and after a few buffings kinda shinny. I have then tried supershine on top and it looks better but not like I have seen here. So whats the secret to a really nice holster? Also what is vineagroon and resylin used for?

I am try to build a OWB with 2 1.5 inch belt slots. My question is how much room do you put between the guns slide and the belt slot wings. Right now my holster pater meansures about 7 inches from one wing to the other. But it just looks to big. On the other hand I am affraid to make it too small for fear the gun wont fit. Any thoughts?

Hi guys, I am having a really hard time building holster in that I can't draw so my patterns come out crappy. Are there any tricks or tools that I can use. Mostly I have problems making the lines curry and flow correctly. Also when I make a belt slide/OWB sides that you run the belt through are never even they are alwasy off. Any help would be greattly apperciated.

Hey what is the oven trick??? -
Hi guys, I have been make some holsters as a hobby for several months. Usually I just go and pick up some single shoulder (I think) 8/9 0z leather at Tandys. It was good for a start but I wqant to bump it up to W & C after reading some posts here. The problem is that when I go to their web site they have several choices for example, skirting leather or briddle leather etc. I thought all I would order was some single shoulder 8/9 0z leather but I don't even see that description on the site. Clearly I am not up on the lingo. Can anyone tell me what I should ask for? Also do I want shoulder, belly or back leather? Thanks in advance.

Hi guys, I need help with the holster I am making. Basicly it is a tuckable IWB using a comp-tac kydex belt clip. i need tend to secure the clip to the body of the holster with either a snap or a chicago screw. I am using 8-9 oz leather so I need a post on my snap or chicago screw that would go thru the leather and the hole on the comp-tac belt clip. So my question is what length post should I use and when can I get them from? thanks for your help in advance.

Thanks for all the great replies. All very helpful. I am off to by a diamond awl today. But how do you sharpen it? Also what is a rectangular punch?
-
Well it was weird because he also said a diamond awl wouldn't go thru two pieces of 7-8 oz leather? Can this be right at all? Also whats the difference between a diamond awl, a scratch awl and any other type of awl? thanks for the replies.

Hi guys, My first post and I have a question. What do most of you use to puch holes for stiches in your rigs? My tandy leather guy said I should pre-drill them with a drill press because a diamond awl will weaken the leather and the stich will pull thru eventually. I have tried and hate the llok of the drilled holes. So what do you guys use? I was thinking abut using that 4 prong thing that Tandy sells ?? But will it go through two pieces of 7-8 oz leather? Any advise would be helpfull
