Thanks for your input greatly appreciated.

Ok rookie question. How do you get the two/multi tone finish on a project like in the attached picture. Without spending a lot of money. Thanks and God bless.

I hate show my ignorance but here goes. I recently purchased some leather working tools that included flat blade tools Lacing/Stitching tools. I’ve noticed they also make Diamond Hole lacing/Stitching Chisel tools. Other than the obvious shape of the hole is there a big difference in which one you use? I’d be curious to hear your personal preferences and why. Thanks for your input and God bless. If the grass is really greener on the other side. Maybe it’s because someone else is taking care of it.

I'm in the market for some leather stamps but unsure what size to purchase. I assume like everything it depends on the application. For example stamps for a belt might be bigger than for a wallet. So I was wondering if anyone had an opinion on what would be a good size for a first set of stamps. Thanks, And God bless....

Lacing chisels.

I have both straight and angled chisels so using the straight chisels isn't an issue. Thanks and God bless.

Even though I've been doing leather work for 2 years I still consider myself a novice. Time and money hasn't allowed me the experience and projects I would like to do. I do agree with using using a stitching groover. A trick I have found is use the groover on both sides of the project. Then only put the chisels in half way or less on both sides making sure to align them. I then take an awl and easily push through the thin layer of leather left guiding it into the correct slot on the back side. It is a little more work but so far has proven to be a better outcome than trying to go through both pieces of leather and hit the groove on the back side. Or trying to add the groove on the back side after using the chisel. The stitches may or may not be perfectly aligned on both sides but it takes close examination to tell. Thanks and God bless.

Thanks for your input. Happy Thanksgiving and God bless.

What is the recommended distance from the edge for saddle stitching. I normally use a stitching groove to stitch in. But I’ve noticed especially on thinner leather even double layers that when I drive in my stitching tools it bulges the leather at 1/8”. I can move in to 3/16” but I didn’t like the look. thanks in advance for your input.

I'm making a rifle sling and I want to put some suede on the back. I've never worked with suede so I'm not sure what I'm looking for. Since the main sling will be 8/9 oz I'm assuming I want the suede to be much smaller like a 2/3 oz. Any input is appreciated.

Rifle sling with scrollwork

How wide is the widest point? -
Very nice and yes the snake is a great idea. What oz leather did you use and did you put a liner on the back?
-
Very nice job!! What oz leather did you use and do you find it necessary to put use a line such as sheepskin or something similar?
-
Very nice job. I'm contemplating making my first set of spur straps as well. And yes I have a pair of boots just like those!

I'm considering making a guitar strap. But I don't want something cheap and quick. What size/oz leather would you recommend for the top and bottom of the strap. Also what width should it be, I'm thinking a minimum of 3" up to a maximum of 4.5". I was also thinking about tying a string from the neck to the base of the body and find what is comfortable for the length. And then add 6" for adjustment when finished. I appreciate any input or if anyone has any patterns that would be great. "If the grass is greener on the other side, maybe it's because someone else is taking care of it."

First Holster...

I liked the holster but I wasn't satisfied so I made another one and stained this one. I also made a cartridge belt to go match. Still happy with how it turned out being a beginner. -
tri-weave padded rifle sling

Great job!! I'm thinking of making a sling for my grandson. What thickness of leather did you use? -
Thanks for your help. Looks like I'm making a trip to the leather store!!

So I've made a few wet molded cases. All I had was 10 oz leather so I skived it down to something around the 6-7-8 oz range. My wife has decided she want's something similar to the cases I've made for a purse but now all I have is 10 and 4 oz leather. I thought about using 4 oz but I was afraid it would be to flimsy even after getting it wet. Has anyone used 4 oz and what kind of luck did you have? Here are a couple of the first cases I've made to give you an idea of the size.

It was either a holster or a belt and I have belts. lol A belt will be next and a more western style holster once I figure out what I want. Design and planning takes longer than actual making anything.
