  1. Hello all,

I have a question about Leather Balm w/Atom Wax that I'll bet maybe someone on this thread could answer: Anyone know what I could use to thin Leather Balm w/Atom wax? I've got some I wanted to use but it's thickened up from sitting. I was guessing it might be water based just from the smell, but I don't know. Has anyone tried thinning it?

    Thanks in advance,

    Bob

Many people thin it with water.

  2. They are no longer one of the places I purchase from.

Several months back, I called a few times and spoke to a number of people there. I was hoping they could recommend a type of leather to use. It was very difficult to get someone on the phone who seemed to have any knowledge of leather.... or else I would get someone who barely spoke english. But the kicker is when I finally got one of them to give me a suggestion (their DIamond Tan)... I asked for a sample and they said they would have to charge me for it. You can't just send me a small swatch, I asked... nope, they have to charge. I forgot how much they wanted for a sample but it was some absurd price (like $15 maybe). Thank you... I'll be glad to spend my money elsewhere.

  3. And ANOTHER thing...

The leather belt on this machine was broken, so the seller whipped up something from a piece of old extension cord, held together with electrical tape. Amazingly enough, this was tough enough to do the job and show that the machine ran OK, at least for the short term. But I clearly need to replace it. I've seen replacement leather-belt stock, with belt-hooks, but I ask myself "is there something more modern than this?" At Grainger, I see stuff like this:

    http://www.grainger....g/N-cc0Z1z0o4ds

Is that what folks use nowadays? Or am I missing something obvious? (The belt that needs replacing appears to be 42" with a 5/16" diameter.)

Thats what use... or similar at least. I use o-thane from http://www.campbell-bosworth.com/ They sell it by the foot (a buck per?).... they also have the connectors.

I love the stuff... seems to make the machine run more precise.

  4. Looking for someone who can sell me western boot lasts over time..

  5. A rant if you will....

Early last month, someone posted a picture of an item they made. I replied with my admiration for the piece. I then sent them a PM to ask more info about a type of rivet they used. A few days went by without a reply so I posted again to the original thread in case they somehow missed my PM. Well, with the new software here, I can see that the person has indeed read my PM and obviously chooses to ignore my very general inquiry.... about a brass rivet for god's sake. I wasn't asking for their source... I just asked him if he could tell me more about it and if it's hard to set.

I guess what bothers me most is this person's contribution on leatherworker.net is almost entirely made up of them asking questions or seeking info.

Luckily, this place is full of people at the other end of the character spectrum.

  6. My first try making a traditional British briefcase. Sedgwick bridle leather in Australian nut color. Found a few pictures of a model I liked and copied it. So it isn´t my own design. I have carried it for a couple of months. I still like the look but it is a tad too heavy due to my leather crafting inexperience. Next time I will use more delicate leather and a much smaller metal bar (sewn in the lid and the handle is attached to it). Thanks for looking.

I like it. Impressive for a first try.

  7. i have a chance to buy a singer 31-15 i want it to sew thin leathers. wallet thickness. i have a tippman boss to sew the heavy stuff. the guy wants 50 for the machine he picked it up at an auction a few years ago and used it for a few canvas projects. would the machine do what i want it to do without any problems?

I sew wallets on mine. For $50, why not try it out as you can always get rid of it without taking a hit on resale.

  8. Thanks, bdt.

BTW, are these setting machines expensive?

There are a couple of types of lacing hooks... some are easier to set than others.

For this type below, there are pricey dies that can be used in a press but I bet if one were crafty /skilled, they could get away with a simple hand-held splash tool and a piece of steel to back the rivet while setting.

For 'speed' lacing hooks like found on the bottom row of this site, all you need is small rapid/jiffy rivets and the rivet setting tool from tandy.

  9. Hello everybody, I hope this question finds everyone happy and healthy. I need to find a source for the old trophy type belt buckles that had a bezel that would allow you to put a silver dollar in it. The bezel had two (2)small screws in the back that let you get the front loose to install the coin. A friend here has a belt and buckle that one of his friend gave hime years ago, and the buckle has just worn out and broke the loop off the back where it attaches to the belt. I have already looked at Tandy, Springfield Leather, Hidecrafters, and S-T Leather, with no luck. If anyone has a source or know where we could get one I would really appreciate the information. Hopefully this search works... do any of these look like what you are talking about:

  10. All,

I have some very dry and 'boardy' leather that I think could benefit from the addition of some type of solid fat worked into it.

I've tried using neatsfoot, evoo and various beeswax based solutions.... not much luck.

I'd like to try dubbin although I've never used it and not sure it would work. So I need a US supplier and/or other ideas/thoughts on what to try.

    Thanks,

    --L--
