Oh and one other thing for you Zonies that love to invade our beautiful beaches when your state turnes into the fires of Mordor... When you're driving around SD, make sure you use the pedal on the right! You guys are killing us
haha. I can assure you I'm not part of that problem.
Thanks for the info about Stonehenge... just the type of place I was looking for. My wife & I will be back before the end of summer so I'll be sure to check em out.
-
To bad you guys aren't down in SD, we have 3 fine leather joints in the area
Where? Like many Zonies, I do my job to take over your beaches for the summer.
and to the original poster... welcome.

I'd like to replace them as a standard supplier as well.... mainly because they take forever to ship out west.
The trouble is, I haven't found anyone on this side of the country that has similar inventory.

OMG thanks so much! Will Google it now. We just bought the machine and can not use it!
Good luck. I know your pain. I had all sorts of troubles when I purchased mine.... including not knowing how to sew.
This link below has the best timing instruction I've been able to find on the 31 series machines. The website is horribly formatted but the info is there...

Yessir, I am. Does the direction of the winding on the bobbin make a difference? I will try to take some pictures and/or a video this evening.
Install your bobbin in the case like the 3rd pic down at this website...

I never had sewn a stitch in my life before purchasing my 31-15. There was a good deal of learning to do before I got it working right. But the good thing is, it's a very simple machine to work on. The below link has the best tuning info for the 31 series machine. The formatting on the website is less than perfect and can be hard to read but the info is golden...

I know what the shuttle is but do not know where the "shuttle point" is.
It's the pointy/sharp looking end of the shuttle hook. Do a google image search for shuttle hook and you will see the obvious pointed end of a shuttle.
Turn the wheel toward you until the needlebar is on its upstroke and the point of the shuttle is in the center of the eye of the needle. Adjust the needlebar so that the eye of the needle is one-sixteenth of an inch below the shuttle point.

I just bought a 31-15 yesterday. I sewed on it right before i bought it and it was a champ. But then i loaded it in my pick up, took it hime, and now it wont sew. All of the top tread seems to be feeding fine, it just wont catch the bobbin thread. I have my needle in right, and a bobbin full of thread. i can roll it over by hand, and it will loosely catch, but as soon as i put the power to it, it pulls through. Any help is greatly appreciated!
Are you holding both threads back behind the work for the first few stitches?
Can you take any pictures or perhaps a small video(youtube)?

Nicely done!!
Count me in for a copy of the pattern if you ever get one you'd like to share.

Oh I like that. Nicely done!

Typically, I'm not a fan of tooled//stamped/carved leather but I like this... perhaps I'm just not a fan of western style tooling.
I like the layout of the wallet too and the overall workmanship looks nice as well. Good job!

What size needle do you use. I have some that measure .050 on the shank and .075 at the eye.
I can throw the thread into the eye so I know I can use a smaller needle. They go in the punched hole (awl puched) up to the eye and that is where the struggle begins and the needle is winning. I will be sewing knife sheaths and at least one holster for now.
I read where folks use different sizes but the numbers they use are greek to me and different companies seem to use different systems.
Thanks
Jack
http://www.wrtcleather.com/1-ckd/tutorials/_leatherstitch.html (this is a nice tutorial, pay close attention to #8)
Personally, I use the #0 harness needles from Tandy.
Also look here for more info where you may be able to determine what you have...

Amazing work as always.

All machinery is in working order and has been tested. Local pickup only, no delivery.
I'm assuming the equipment is located in Worcester, MA?

Okay, so I'm not a leatherworker. Yet. But I've always been into making things from scratch like that. And it just so happens, my dad found an entire deer hide he had tanned years ago and never did anything with it. So he gave it to me and assigned me to task of making something out of it.
I need probably the most simple thing possible. I was thinking a belt, maybe gloves, something I'll actually use often. Can anyone give me any direction on where to start? I don't have any specialty leatherworking tools. I'm not too interested in embellishing or adorning anything yet. I'd just like something well-made and practical.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
The most simple thing might be a belt or a pouch of some sort. Do you have a dog... perhaps try making a collar. Another idea if you live somewhere that gets cold maybe you can try making a pair of mits.
What you need to do is learn about hand sewing leather. Read the section on sewing leather here as there are some good tutorials floating around. Also do a google search for hand sewing leather for even more.
You can make a lot of things with a knife, some thread and 2 needles.
Like Dwight said, if you have a leather store close by then you should visit them.
have fun...

Sale flyer from Weaver's good through July.
Thanks.
Do you get the flyer through the mail, or online somehow?
I've been a weaver customer for a while and spent good money there. I've never heard about sales or deals. I'll call them and ask about it.

bridle leather blanks since they are on sale.
Just curious, how do/did you find out they are on sale?

Pics?

Is there anywhere I can get replacement belts for these machines, or equivalent currently-produced belts that will fit?
Are you talking about the belts for the roller feed?

I really like that bag... a lot.
What type of leather was used?

Hey Everyone!
Anyone know where I can find the round metal spots with the two prongs on them? I found brass and nickel spots but I REALLY want copper. These are going to be used to adorn rawhide knife sheaths. I'd appreciate any information.

once you get there, search box on the right side... just type in copper and hit the enter key.

Woodware Repetitions sold off most of the George Barnsley stock to Hale & Co in the US, who have an extensive catalogue on their website (http://haleandco.com/). They now sell most of the products on eBay.
Woodware Repetitions have started making a limited range of the old Barnsley products, but they don't have a website.
Check out this thread for full information: http://leatherworker...=1entry141469
Much of the cordwaining related tools Edwin Hale is selling is newer stock that he just drop ships direct from Woodware. I wonder if those of you in Europe wouldn't get a better price by going direct to the manufacturer.
