I was just lucky enough to be given a few tools from a friend (they were his aunt's) A few stamps, mostly ones I had but better quality (everything's from the fifties) and these things that I'm not sure about. I figure that the one is for running a double bead on leather? But the other ones (I have 3 of them) have me baffled - mebbe something to do with lacing? The hole through the middle is larger at one end than the other and the ring around the middle is made of a heavy rubber. For all any of us know, it might not be a leather tool at all but just something that ended up in the box. LOL Any help's appreciated :0) Rob

He's just using the 9/16 as a hub to drill and tap to receive the 3/8 bolts He could use a 5/8 bolt if he wanted to, or bigger - he just wants something with 6 sides so he can drill/tap into 3 (every other) of the flats.

Hah!!!! Finally found this thread! (it took me a while and search wasn't "as" helpful as I'd hoped) I read a reference to your simplified mexican braid in another post - my arthritic ole mitts are gonna love you for this tip :0) It looks like a much easier braid to revisit for tightening every few loops as well :0) Thanks Shirley! Nice work! :0) What width lace did you use and hole size and spacing please :0) I just used a basket weave to close up a sissy bar bag and 1/8th lace / 3/32 holes / 5 stitch per inch spacing proved to be verrrrrry labour intensive and hard on the hands (bad arthritis). I'd like to know a more manageable combination for structural lacing. Do you use some kind of needle when lace/stitching things together or a fid to open up the hole and then retighten the braid?

LOL Prob'ly not ;0) People who build custom bikes are every bit as fussy as we are about their finished product. Don't take it (customer wanting black) as a slag on your work guy cuz a) your work is fantastic :0) and it's just a bike thing. LOL I'm pretty big about subtle whenever I do anything to my bike. IE: you'll never see any of those LED's glowing under my gas tank. I will likely do a custom paint job on the bike down the road and it will incorporate the ever overdone flames in the design. However, they will be very light and subtle ghost flames. Only someone taking a real close look and appreciating the work will actually see them - like the prize at the bottom of the Cracker Jack box ;0) It's just a personal thing and yes it plays down the art of a job but those who take the time to look closer will "get it" :0) That said, I'm looking forrward to being good enough at this to be able to pull off the antiquing finishes and burnished look, but for now bike stuff will likely all be done black cuz it hides my booboos ;0) and is easier to maintain with all of the weather and oil/grease etc that bikes are prone to come in contact with ;0) Beauty seat! :0)

So I'm using a Spanish braid to attach the front panel to a sissy bar bag - what a pain, to small a piece to have any maneuvering room for the needle etc ... very awkward. Good project to learn it on tho' And it brought a question to mind - when you guys are stitching seat tops to bottoms, are you lapping the joint? or butt joint? I imagine you use a lap joint but was wrong once before ... 'thought I was wrong ;0)

Using staples premium clear view It's just a sissy bar bag and I don't want to take chances on dye running in wet weather so will likely just leave the inside raw and fuzzy ;0)

Okay, so for the experiment I got the tape off the back of one of the pieces without using heat (founbd a wrinkle in the tape and tediously worked things free with a modelling tool) and one using heat. The heat one came away a bit easier but seemed to leave a bit of residue (warm glue = residue) When I dye the project, I'll see if the little bit of residue has any ill effect. Hehehe, I just happen to have retirned from the garage with my heat gun ;0) Gonna try a combination of that and the cut it in the middle of the piec so as not to screw up the edges so much Will let ya know Thanks all :0)
