8 1/2 x 11 notepad cover.
Big Papa Leather replied to Rawhide's topic in Books, Journals and Photo Albums
Really cool cougar! What weight of the leather did you use on the parts? Also, is this a highly requested item? I have seen a few in the last month or so on here. Thanks for sharing! Allen -
First off again thanks to Froghunter I used the skull cowboy head from his clock. I hope I did it justice. Front of Wallet Back This is a standard Tandy Biker wallet. It has the thin pig leather inside with the bellows type pocket. Not my favorite design for an interior.. but it works. Now all I have to do is find it a new home! Allen

What is wrong with me!

OOooh tell me about a Chuck Smith knife. What makes it your fav? I've read about Henleys as well. I was using a regular blade, then moved to an steel angle blade and now I have a ceramic filigree. So far I'm liking the ceramic although I spent tome extra time stroping it to get it from dragging. I did it on my flathone and a diamond spray. I like the Stohlman ball bearing swivel. But I like the others as well. I like the knurling on the one Tandy the best. Both are adjustable so it's hard to describe the difference. I will get a SK-3 of Pabloz if I can stop myself from spending up the disposable income on other stuff. Have you ever thought of a payment plan? LOL! I have seen some different shaped head knives that interest me, but have not used mine enough to justify another. Allen -

What is wrong with me!
Big Papa Leather replied to Big Papa Leather's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
Johanna Yes, I have seen them and would like to get one in the Royalty Blue! WestTX I go to the one in Austin. On 35 near downtown. I work in Austin a few day a week so it is almost convenient! Minisaddle- I have only been at this for a couple months now. I am unsure of the proper etiquette, so with 2 months experience how many knives should I have? Allen -
I am interested in other Man purses! LOL As a person (my wife calls paranoid) who likes to be prepared, I find my EDC (every day carry) items range from alot to excessive. It varies from day to day but usually consists of atleast a couple pocket knives, cell phone, flashlight, multi-tool, Glock 27 w/extra mag, compass and a flame producing device. I do not like to carry a fanny pack and I am not always willing to pack a backpack especially when shopping as it always makes me feel as if I am watched more. (ok maybe a bit of paranoia) So a cool carry bag or man purse would fit the bill. Anyone care to share other photos? Allen

Ok, I have spent the last two days looking at swivel knives. I already have 3. Two of the Tandy ones and a Stohlman ball bearing one. I think I need more. But why? Why more. Then there's head/round knives. I have one a nice Stohlman one bur I have been searching the internet for more.. Why? I saw some cool vintage rawhide mallets on eBay. I have one of the Tandy ones... Do I need another? I find my car sometimes points itself toward the local Tandy. I don't need anything and have looked at everything there about 2000 times. But I still find myself yearning to go. Why? Please help me understand. Allen

And the winner is!!!!!

Aww Shoot! I didn't win? And it was my birthday? No not really my birthday. Oh well, maybe next time. Congrats Ferret! Allen -
If your talking about the black heavy leather that you buy at Tandy or wherever, that is already dyed, NO do not buy this to attempt to carve. It not intended to be carved. It is already treated and will not case properly to carve. I have had very good success with a smooth even coat of black dye using Eco-Flo Coal Black leather dye. I apply it with a pice of scrap sheep's wool and then apply a finish after it is allowed to dry a full day. You will ber minimal lifting using the Super Sheen or Satin Sheen but I have not experienced any smudging or swirly odd finishes. My biggest problem has been having the patience to wait to move to the next step. Back to the carving, although still learning all this myself... Veg tan in natural color is the only way I know to do it correctly. I would think if you applied the dye, You'd almost have to do the carving right after applying the dye, then the leather is wet with seeping dye.?. Casing the leather after the dye seems counter productive. Allen

Sounds like this group deal in QB is similar to the Assembly/Kit feature in MS Accounting. I like it as well as I can make whatever item I want and track any parts or consumables inside the program without a lengthy cluttered invoice. The customer sees only the finished product and thier expense. I see all the ancillary stuff. Allen

great Thanks! Allen

Your wallet the KK way Special Event!
Big Papa Leather replied to Kevin King's topic in Special Events, Contests and Classes
I'm in. Thanks! Allen -
I do not use quickbooks, I use MS Accounting but I think some of the features are similar. MS Accounting allows you to set up an item as a "kit" or assembled product. This allows you to set your labor rate as a unit. Materials as a unit. Plus you have a few customizable fields. You can call them hardware or whatever. However you want to record your other parts/findings. This way you can track inventory and cost of goods sold. The Item name can be whatever you want and you can change the units within the assembled product. For instance let's say we are making a saddle. Materials will be entered into the field. Labor entered. Hardware can be it's own field. You get the drift. When you print or invoice the customer sees Custom Saddle on their receipt. You track the materials, labor and what not behind the scenes. Same item name and you do ALOT if custom tooling. Labor times go up... Customer sees Custom saddle on thier reciept. Your accounting sees additional labor charges in the correct columns. Hope this helps! Allen

Has anyone made one of these? LOL I can't get the search to work for me today. If I search "money belt" it tells me it's under 3 letters and I need a new search. I dunno. But I know stitching the liner in would be the best way to do this, but I do not want to stitch the entire belt. Anyone have any ideas short of a huge amount of time stitching the entire belt, or maybe incorporating the stitching of the pocket/liner into the design some how? I dunno. Help!? Allen

I need new leather shears for heavier weight leathers
Big Papa Leather replied to Randyc's topic in Leather Tools
I would like to make a recommendation. Look at www.wolffind.com, look in industrial scissors: Industrial Scissors They have a huge selection of shears. I am a dealer for them as well. I personally use the KAI 7280 model. Kai 7280 They are workhorses. I can cut thick leathers and thin with little or no effort. They are pricey. The 7280 run about $65.00. I have found that the 5200 series are nice as well. They are not as heavy duty and do not have the same amount of metal and weight behind them as the 7200 series. They are a fine scissor though. All the Kai are made in Japan. There are others on there as well. If you decide you's like to pick up a pair I will get Wolff to drop ship them to you. I will in return donate the difference between my cost (including shipping to you) to Leatherworker.net. So if on a $50.00 web price scissor, my cost is say $37.00 shipped to you, I will donate the difference of $13.00 to leatherworker.net. Sound cool? This goes for ANYONE looking buy scissors for their own shop use. Of course only if this is acceptable to Johanna. Allen -
Bump.... I'm hoping for an update. I would like to know how you fared with these. I like the handle design as well. Allen

I am new. Since we established that now... lol I have found that I enjoy carving. Although not good at it yet, I enjoy it more than the other aspects of the "making stuff" process. My second favorite is the showing off what I did part, so there is incentive to finish it. I have found that I have about 10 items in the finished carving stage and in need of sewing/assembly stage. I also have discovered I have alot of items with no owner. Meaning I have given away a bunch of stuff to friends and family, made them things just to make them, and stuff with no real end destination. My wife will soon be wondering why I need to have this stuff saying around. Anyone else have this problem? Anyone have any tips on how to find the motivation to finish one before you start another? Ha Ha! Allen

Would you mind showing a pic of the inside. As a newbie I am interested in both the artistic outsides of projects but also dig to see the whole deal-io. How it works kind of deal. Thanks! Allen
