  1. The thread size and thickness it can sew really appeal to me. I have other machines but this would fill a gap
  2. Thanks for the honest feedback. I am keen on one of these too. Nice work with the belt. Very nice.
  3. Merry Christmas Gump,

i was wondering if you could give me any tips on how to get the stitch length of my 153W103 to 5 stitches per inch or less. I bought it a few weeks back and a longer stitch length would be awesome.

    cheers

    Paul

  4. Well good news guys! I could not find 2hex bolts for the eccentrics under top cover but noticed the knob for the stitch length adjuster was protuding more than what I would expect. So I gave it a firm tap with my palm and instantly the feed dog started working and the walking action started working. It dies look like the presser feet timing will need adjusting.
  5. Hi Floyd, Thank you for your observations. I am an absolute beginner when it comes to sewing machines. So it is quite likely that I have made some incorrect assumptions and the reverse or stitch linkage mechanism I videoed is not related to my issue. I really don't know what things are yet with this machine and did not think it had a reverse mechanism or how that gets engaged. Thank you to you and all the others here that are assisting with this issue. I'll have a look later at it when get back from work cheers Paul
  6. Hi Eric, Thank you for the great advice. I will have a look at it when I get back from work in around 12 hours. Just one question? What's the eccentrics? Cheers Paul
  7. Hi Constabulary, Yes but it made no difference. It still sewed in the same hole. 0 stitch length. thank you for asking though. Kind regards Paul
  8. Here are a few short videos of different views of the machine
  9. Thanks Guys, Some great information there. The clutch is still engaged. I'll see if I can check the timing marks and top lever to see if that part of the timing is still ok.
  10. I bought a Singer 153W103 sewing machine a few days ago. It was sewing nicely when I tested it After setting it up today and testing it on leather and webbing, I tried adjusting the stitch length. as I did this there was a distinctive clunk noise. The feed dog appeared to have dropped below the surface level at it's highest level. The feed dog and the feet both stopped the walking action. So now when I try to use it it just stitches in the same hole.. I have tried adjusting the stitch length back but no joy. Any suggestions on how to get it working again would be appreciated.
  11. Hi Winterborn, Which part of Australia are you located?
  12. Nice comparison. Which one is your favourite for best results?
  13. That is a work of art. How much are they worth?
  14. A speedy stitcher sewing awl was used for the top collar top stitching instead of hand sewing with two needles because the soft padding and lining on the panels made it practically impossible to sew by hand with two needles.
  15. Thanks Colin, For the pattern, I bought an old nylon proline golf bag (mid 80s vintage) from a secondhand store at a local waste tip for $3 then completely unpicked it and created cardboard patterns from the pieces. That saved a lot of time trying to match up patterns. Previously though I had drawn one up on AutoCAD but the size was slightly bigger and complex so decided to copy the proline bag so I did not miss the deadline to get it into the show. Have not used it on the course yet but friends that have seen it really like it.
  16. Thanks for the compliments.
  17. Thank you for demonstrating a clever way of using this tool. Nice work. Welcome to the forum.
  18. Your craftsmanship looks amazing. How long have you been doing leather work? From the look of the stitching this is completely hand stitched. Any tips for a beginner? Regards Paul
  19. Thank you. I would like to make another one sometime using an industrial walking foot machine to see if it could be done in less than week but still hand sew the collars. Alternatively I would like to use a firmer leather and completely hand sew it. It was very satisfying to make. I made it to enter into our local village craft show. So I had quite a tight deadline bearing in mind he machine I was using. It ended up getting first place in its category.
  20. From the album: Golf bag

This is the sewing machine I used to sew the panels of the golf bag together. It is an able 290, cost about $300 AU. It is far from ideal for making golf bags since it is all hand cranked and takes ages to sew. Because one hand is cranking and he other holding the work. That said it did not miss a stitch and sewed comfortably through 2 layers of chrome tanned leather, 2 layers of foam and 6 layers of lining (includes bias binding). The thickest it sewed was what is mentioned above plus another 4 layers of chrome tanned leather. Which was at the umbrella holder near the base. The magnifying glass was to help keep the stitching as straight as possible whilst juggling the panels through the machine. There were parts of the build that I needed to hand sew either with waxed cotton thread and two needles or a speedy stitcher.
