Has anybody out there ever made a tricorn or even a cavalier hat? I was thinking about making one, but I've never made a hat before. Any tips, suggestions, patterns, or photos? Thanks, Andy

I think you're talking about the brandname Lexan right? I'm sure I could make the handle out of just about anything. I think I'll browse some luggage at the store and get some ideas. I like HellCat's method. I think it will keep with the rustic look of the bag I'm making.

"It is just a bunch of hoooy measuring or specifying the actual thickness of the leather." HAHA! I hear ya'! I like TrooperChuck's method of making some sample swatches. I guess it all boils down to what you feel is best for any project you want to tackle. Math, shmath! -Andy

Actually we're both partially right. From Wikipedia: In some parts of the world, top-grain thicknesses are described using weight units of ounces. Although the statement is in ounces only, it is an abbreviation of ounces per square foot. The thickness value can be obtained by the conversion: 1 oz/ft² = 1/64 inch (0.4 mm) Hence, leather described as 7 to 8 oz is 7/64 to 8/64 inches (2.8 to 3.2 mm) thick. The weight is usually given as a range because the inherent variability of the material makes ensuring a precise thickness very difficult. Other leather manufacturers state the thickness directly in millimeters. http://' target="_blank">

Looks like I may revive an old post, but.... Doesn't the ounce weight equal that of a one square foot piece of leather? For instance, a square foot of 8-9 ounce leather weighs 8-9 ounces.

Hey All, Does anyone know where to find antique brass D-rings? I need a pair of 1-1/2 inch rings for a project. -Andy Nevermind... I just answered my own question. I forgot about Ohio Travel Bag! They have everything!

Thanks for the info guys! I PMd Ed like you suggested. I'll take a look at that book too. The bag is coming along pretty nicely, I'm going to start on the strap maybe tonight.

Hey All, First off, awesome forum! I'm so glad I found this site. Everybodys work is so inspiring! I am working on making a messenger bag for myself and I was thinking about adding a grab handle to the top. I kind of want one like the hanle on the bag in the photo attached. Do you guys have any tips on how that's made? It looks like a "tube" of leather stitched around a flat piece I think. Now that I think about it and type this out I probably answered my own question! Thanks for the help. I'll post some in progress photos soon. Andy

That's way cool! I love the birds on the bottom. They remind me of a bad-ass hot rod pinstriping style.

That is the nicest, coolest piece of work I've seen in a long time. Very inspiring! Thank you.

Yeah, the top of the jaw bone on the left should terminate at the cheek bone.

What is the weirdest thing you have seen wrapped in leather?

That is amazing!
