Greetings , Newbie ( sort of) question about Bracers
AndyL1 replied to ormus1's topic in Historical Reenactment
Those are fantastic! I love the coloring and the cut out negative space. Good job dude. Now I need to go make myself a new set. Cheers, Andy -
I should get it by the 29th via UPS. I'll take some and give some info on it by then. -Andy

Thanks everyone for chiming in on this. After much deliberation (and also finding a sweet deal on an electric!) I decided to go another route for my first machine. Please feel free to posting to this thread, maybe it will give anyone else looking at that stitcher some good info. Cheers, Andy

A simple bushcraft sheath
AndyL1 replied to Talfuchre's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Beautiful work! I really like that rectangular shape. Something about it just looks so nice compared to a sheath cut to match the shape of the knife. Great photography too. I like the whittled curls on the sticks. Cheers, Andy -
Well guys, thank you very much for the insight on this machine. I went ahead and bought it through the eBay auction for $650. Thanks again for all your help in my decision making process! Cheers, Andy

Hey all, I stumbled upon a JUKI LS-321 Cylinder arm machine for sale. It also has a reverse stitching. It is the head only for $650. Question #1: Will this stitch through 2-3 layers of 5/6oz? Maybe even like two layers of lighter weight stuff for soft sided pouches and things? Question #2: Is this a good price on a this used machine with the head only? Attached is a photo. Thanks, Andy

Regarding this machine. I've never bought a machine before so I'm not quite sure which one or style would suit me best. I've used the Boss before, years ago my friend had one. I like the low-tech hand crank aspect of it, but at the same time I wonder if an electric machine would be better/just as good or what. Do you find it slow to use as it's a hand crank? Do you often need 3 hands to stitch, like 2 to hold your project and one to pull the handle? Thanks for any info you guys may have. -Andy

I just got done reading your tutorial on the other forum. Thanks for posting that! I really like the design of your journal covers. The pen holder is a nice touch along with a very classy looking snap closure. I think I'm going to make one of these for my own personal use based on your design if you don't mind? Nice work on this too! I really like this. I think you'll find these get a lot more refined as you make more of them. My one bit of advice would be to use some sort of guide to cut your round parts with, like the curves on the snap tabs. Also, I would round your corners of the cover first and then groove in your stitching guides. This way your stitching matches the profile of the cover. Or just keep it squared off. Little details like that will make a big difference. Cheers, Andy

Oooh this doesn't sound like fun. Here's to your health my friend! Get well soon. Cheers, Andy

Biker Wallet First Attempt
AndyL1 replied to ericluther's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Pony? Nah, I don't have one. My tools are my lap, a cold beer, a comfy couch, and a little TV. I do have these nice little clips that an auto upholstery friend of mine gave me. They hold the pieces really tight and don't mark the leather. If I get a chance I'll shoot a picture of them for you guys. -Andy -
Biker Wallet First Attempt
AndyL1 replied to ericluther's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
That looks pretty sweet! Be careful with the groover, even if you have a line on both sides you have to be sure your awl punches through straight otherwise you'll still miss your line on the reverse side. Then you'll still have crooked stitching and next to a nice and straight line. -Andy -
Waterproofing leather
AndyL1 replied to AndyL1's topic in Dyes, Antiques, Stains, Glues, Waxes, Finishes and Conditioners.
Thanks Bob! I've never used a spray sealant like this on leather so I didn't know the result it would have. It will be exposed to the elements so I don't want my work to be destroyed. -
hey thanks dude! Try posting your logo up on this forum: http://www.graphicdesignforum.com/forum/index.php? Get some outside feedback on it too. I get good response from those guys over there from time to time. -Andy

Waterproofing leather

Shoot the crickets are very loud in this thread. :-( -
I like this second attempt better than the first. Only thing I may recommend is make the two small bumps towards the top a little more pronounced as they may dissapear if this gets printed smaller. The refinements you have after this one start to lose the letters and may as well be a silhouette of a head knife. I don't think I'd worry about having the logo "say" leather. You're playing off your initials and sometimes that's good enough... in my humble opinion of course. Cheers, Andy

Hell yeah! That is way nice. What color dye is that? Looks like the Tandy Mahogony that I like to use, but a bit more red.

Hey All, What is a good way to permanently seal a piece of Veg Tan leather? I am going to make some Coats of Arms that will be inlayed into a slab of redwood and the finished product will hang outside off of a wrought iron bracket. Can I use polyeurathane as a top coat sealant for this? I want the leather to last for quite a long time. It will be painted and also a little gold leaf on it as well. My first thought was to call on my woodworking skills and carve the whole thing in the wood, but I thought that doing it in leather might be another nice touch. Thanks, Andy

Hunka Hunka Skully love
AndyL1 replied to Big Papa Leather's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
That is way cool! I may have found something to make for my wife. Mind if I borrow the Skull? Good job on the construction. Cheers, Andy -
I agree. I really like the one with the antler handle too. How do you seal the inside to make it suitable for drinking? -Andy
