  1. do you know of any strap end cutters with a V or English point that has a handle that is 3/8" round. I'd like to mount it in my grommet press to cut straps quicker with a jig instead of hammering this looks like it could possibly be 3/8" waiting on seller to let me know https://www.ebay.com/itm/324754875911 also if you know of any kind of base type of thing that the has 3/8 shaft that I could use in the bottom part of the press like this https://www.weaverleathersupply.com/catalog/item-detail/65-6585/brass-anvil/pr_9197 let me know, I'll probably make something DIY though
  2. thats good to hear, I don't even think artisan offers a speed reducer unless an aftermarket one fits on it any complaints with the artisan machine or reason you went with them? are either of them the 2618-1B?
  3. so comparing these two machines which seem most recommended. artisan says that it does not need a gear reducer, but spec wise they all seem about the same.. any reason not to get one or the other?
  4. yeah I just feel like a 29 or a post style would be to limited, patching pants isnt done a lot just sometimes where a cylinder would be a little nicer. mainly sewing leather, bags, patches on odd shape things so I think a cylinder arm is the most versital for the small shop. I'll get a flat bed machine at some point as well for more of the cordura style work think
  5. its probably one of those things where you need to own a heavy duty machine and try to sew thin stuff on it and fail. he mentions not being able to sew on the edge on his old one. would have been a better video to show him sewing that same material with the old setup to see how it fails
  6. patching pants isnt really a primary use case, its just something I would end up using it for. hat patches and patches on products will be really nice on the cylinder opposed too what I have now and I think it should sew my straps well too and be able to get into areas for modifying/prototyping
  7. recommendation and pricing from artisan " I'll be sewing patches on hats, patching pants, modifying/prototyping small cordura bags/webbing, most commonly sewing two pieces pre finished veg tanned leather thats about 3/16" total occasionally sewing thicker raw (harder) veg tanned leather using thread size 69 due to my limitation but would like to go thicker I'll want to get the drops down guide and platform with the cylinder machine it to use it as an all around machine until I get a second flat bed machine that's a little better for small cordura/webbing/velcro/zipper bags " The Artisan 2618-1B is best suited for the range of your sewing needs. The light medium to medium heavy material or leather. i.e. cordura, webbing. - No light weight material. i.e. chiffon, silks, lace, dress shirt linen. - Patching pants, modifying and prototyping. Thread range - Bonded nylon or polyester - size 33 (tex-35) up to 207 (tex-210) Total layers and thickness (3/16") is well under the 7/16" maximum thickness. The only thing we have questions on is the raw harder leather (veg tanned). If the veg tanned leather is very dense and thick (7-10 oz.), the machine might struggle with 2-3 layers of it, not producing good quality stitches or worst case, thread bunching. Leather types like heavy saddle bags, skirting, harness reins not recommended. Thread tension and or mechanical adjustment will be needed to produce good quality stitches for these types of leathers or goods. Artisan 2618-1B with 'U' table setup complete @ $2305.00 Flip down/up roller edge guide @ $90.00 Work platform 2618 @ $100.00 Shipping to your residential address with delivery liftgate service @ $295.00 Colfax, California sales tax is 7.25% $2495.00 Subtotal $295.00 Freight $180.89 Sales Tax $2970.89 Total === However I found there store is only about 2.5 hours from me so I could probably get around the freight and make a trip leaving me at $2675 for machine, platform, guide So it's right about the same as a shipped cobra 26: Cobra 26 shipped $2600 With platform and guide https://industrialsewingmachineman.com/machines/mach.asp?dir=sewmach&brand=Cobra&Model=Class+26&ProductType=Industrial+Straight+Stitch+Machines Cobra 26 $2500 + 300 shipping: 2,740 -with platform and drop down guide https://www.aldenleathersupply.com/collections/machines/products/cobra-class-26?variant=31699241336878 alternatively I could maybe import a used 1341 for around 2400-3,000 and do a motor swap to 110v (not sure cost on that) Cowboy CB341 $3025 https://www.tolindsewmach.com/cb341.html 2395.00+ 95 removable flat bed, adjustable pedestal $150, drop down guide, probably 90, shipping probably 295 Thoughts on what to go with ? since artisan is within 3 hours I imagine that might be the best bet for future fixing?
  8. I'm not seeing the price on the cb6900 https://www.cowboysew.com/6900-best-sewing-machine-for-making-leather-bags.htm you think this machine is best for all around thin and thick work?
  9. thanks for the info heres what artisan dealer told me about the 2 machines. I didnt ask about the 335 but saw some info in another thread its even lighter duty/cheaper and they have an option where its portable (mounted to a piece of wood not a table, but it is 86 pounds so semi portable..) " The Artisan 2618-1B is most compatible with the other two machines you have mentioned in your email. The Artisan 246VA is a little different. It has a 10" arm from the base to the needle and 1.75" diameter at the rotating hook area. It has a 'M' size rotating hook and bobbin system. Compound walking foot, sews up to 7/16" and maximum thread size is 138 (tex-135). The Artisan 2618-1B: It has a 10" arm from the base to the needle and the diameter of the cylinder arm is around 3". It has a drop-in 'U' size bobbin and vertical rotating hook system. Compound walking foot, sews up to 7/16" and maximum thread size is 207 (tex-210). " so probably between the two 2618 is closer to what would be good for me how does the 441 handle 3/16 (4mm)?
  10. thanks I think I've been there once before when I lived in the Bay Area what would be the comparable model to the 1341 the 246VA or the 2618-1B https://www.artisansew.com/cylinderarmandpostbedmachine.html they also have a new 335 B light weight / medium mahcine to 3/8” leather which would fit my needs now but i think I'd want the option to go bigger than 3/8 in future. they dont show the price just have it on the news page https://www.artisansew.com/news.html
  11. Hey guys i'v been wanting to get a cylinder arm machine for years but always end up lost on what to get and a bit discouraged by the super high prices. Can you recommend a cylinder arm machine for occasional use; sewing patches on hats, patching pants, modifying/prototyping small cordura bags, leather 4-6mm. It would be nice to have a strap on table attachment but I could probably make something DIY. currently using a sail rite. I'm in Northern California Sacramento area and cant find anything on craigslist used other than a Nakajima 380B for $950 3 hours away and a CONSEW 227R-2 for 1,350 9 hours away I'd like to be in the 1,000-2,000 range but let me know what you think I should get cobra 26 seems like it could be a good option Cobra 26 $2500 + 300 shipping: 2,740 -with platform and drop down guide https://www.aldenleathersupply.com/collections/machines/products/cobra-class-26?variant=31699241336878 Cobra 26 shipped 2600 With platform and guide (site seems sketch though) https://industrialsewingmachineman.com/machines/mach.asp?dir=sewmach&brand=Cobra&Model=Class+26&ProductType=Industrial+Straight+Stitch+Machines cobra 26 EPS shipped: 3,457.55 with platform and edge guide https://leathermachineco.com/product/cobra-class-26-with-eps/
  12. any done a full granite top workbench ? might have some left over from my kitchen thinking about doing my bench with it. not sure how it would hold up to pounding grommets and what not (probably still use a rubber or wood mat under it) any experience with this or should I just stick to some kind of wood top ?
  13. oh interesting thanks for the thoughts. any recommendation on shoe polish type or brand? I'm not worried about saving this one, I make them and sell them so I'm just trying to make a product that holds up well. Typically worn leather has a nice look to it but this doesnt really take that on
  14. the weaver pieces fit in my hiker press thanks for the idea I'll have to see if the 104 star back works with my rubber. it looks thanks for the idea they do thanks I'm going to see if it works with my material that would be convenient
  15. Hey guys wondering if you had any suggestion on how to make this leather hold up better to mud, dust, rain, sun, pressure washing with water ect. This handle is about 4 months of hard use and looking pretty haggard. With these pre oiled/waxed leathers do I need to be coating them with something special like you would natural veg tanned leather? leather:Badalassi Carlo Waxy - Oiled Pullup Veg Tanned Leather https://www.rmleathersupply.com/products/waxy-veg-tanned-leather-4-5oz-1-8mm-made-in-italy so far this leather has been the best I've tried in terms of the raw edge not getting fuzzy after lots of washing
  16. this is not something that needs to be pretty no, more of a production thing and backside is pretty well hidden
  17. Hey guys looking for help making my products, would want to do runs of 50-100 but could do more in future Process: —Leather cut to: 16” x 2.25” —Fold leather along wide side and sew along edge with label on right edge —26" Webbing strap pulled through leather —Grommet set on each side of webbing, Center of grommet to center of grommet: 24_3/8” —Excess edge cut off and burned near grommet Materials: —Leather: 16x2.25” waxy I've got a source currently but open —Webbing: 1” tubular polyester black . I've got a source currently and can have it cut —Grommets: #0 stainless rolled spur grommet. I prefer Hiker brand but open to other options —Labels: I have these but could be open to stamping as well I might have a source on having the leather cut and sewn if someone just wanted to do the assembly/grommeting
  18. thank you, I just hear so many bad things about working with people in china where they just try to rip you off and get your money. On alibaba theres a bunch of trading companies pretending to be manufacturers and hard to distinguish one over the other. I was hoping to find someone who has first hand experience with some kind of manufacturing company to help For this particular bag I have one made and it's pretty basic, I'm not to worried about the product getting ripped off its more so I dont want get a shipment of poorly made ones or not made at all
  19. anyone have any experience with self piercing rivets? preferably with a hand press attachment? looking to speed up my need of riveting 2 pieces of rubber strap together (pretty similar to leather)
  20. hey guys I usually buy from ohio travel bag but I can't sort their rivets by size and its annoying, can someone recommend a site that does I'm looking for a slightly shorter length then the 7mm post length than this https://ohiotravelbag.com/products/a-313-np?variant=30383472934996 so like 5- 6mm post length but still with a large head around 8-9mm? I was only able to find really tiny heads and that will pull through
  21. Hi guys I was wondering if anyone had any experience with bag manufacturering? I'm trying to outsource asmall tactical pouch made (nylon not leather) but dont know where to start. if anyone has any leads or experience that would be really helpful
  22. is there some kind of cap rivet that cuts a hole at same time? I have some grommets like that, not sure if I could do that thick with a grommet tho
  23. didnt make sense to me either?
  24. has anyone used a press to cut holes or set copper rivets? Tandy is the only place I see with those options in a press as attachments but the 3/8 size fits my hiker press https://tandyleather.com/products/press-dies-for-hand-press?variant=31977292365955 wonder how well it works? also a 'decorative' rivet setting option
