Well this is the first project i've been able to work on in about a year, been really busy with work. let me know what you think. Also sorry for the bad pictures i'll try and get some better ones. Rick

i used a 3/16 braided nylon rope don't know what brand it is, i just had it lying around i think it was purchased a wal mart.

I am wanting to make the leap into rawhide and was wondering where is the best place to get it. I am sure that this has already been covered, but i also have a second question. while looking on the web for rawhide suppliers i noticed that some offer rawhide discs for making drums. has anybody had any experience with these? i thought that with my hectic schedule i would be able to case these and then cut them into the strings for braiding. any thoughts?

i used fiebings white saddle soap on the strings. it softened them some but they were still very rigid.

thanks for the input. i used commercial precut lace from tandy for this project and it is very stiff. i wasn't sure if that was part of the problem or not I have just started cutting my own lace. the core that i used was rope and i believe that it was 3/16 diameter. i am cutting some latigo into lace now for another headstall that i am wanting to make but am having trouble beveling. the lace keeps wanting to ride up onto the blade instead of cutting the blades are sharp but i am not getting good results. any thoughts on this, i'm sure that it is user error. i have another quick question. is there anybody that is willing to teach braiding. traveling 6-8 hours from north east Arkansas would be no problem. Thanks Luke I will bring it with me when i come to see you. was hoping to be over that way Saturday but have a farrier coming and that will probably take all day.

entiendo, i really like those. hoping to some day to be able to do work that good myself. whoever gets those should be very happy.

here is a braided hackamore headstall that i just recently finished. i did not make the bosal just the headstall, so let me know what you think. this is the first braided project of this size that i have attempted and i know i need a lot of improvement so also please any pointers that you folks have, please let me know. Thanks

looks really good. I've been trying to work up the nerve and time to start a braiding project of that size.

hidecrafters has a pattern pack of sheridan chap yokes. I ordered one about a month ago. they have plenty to choose from in the pack.

hey Luke I will look you up. I get over there from time to time. You do the same if you get over around Jonesboro. heard the storms got pretty rough over there last weekend.
-
thanks for the replies. was just wondering if anybody else had tried it i was planning on using a strong core even thought the strings appeared a lot stronger than i thought they would be.

i wanted to get some feed back about cutting stings out of light weight veg tan tooling leather. will this work ok? i have some 3-4 oz. stuff that i cut some stings out of and beveled them have yet to do much other that a scarf slide. i had planned on trying to make a set of reins out of it but just have not gotten around to it.

I bought the basics revised edition when I started and found it very helpful, but I think that it is what it says "basic" and that is about all I can accomplish is basic stuff. I hope I'm not robbing this thread but what would someone suggest purchasing next the bosal book or the romel reins book for learning how to extending buttons. Rick

those are beautiful. Excellent work.
-
looks good. I have been wanting to try that but I have been unable to find the rawhide heads. Rick
-
looks really good. know what you mean about the tandy knives. I bought the stolman brand swivel knife i like it alright but i do not like the blades. let me know how you like the barry king knives because that is what i was planning to purchase next. Rick

thanks for the input. all of the colors are over the counter. the "M" is fiebings mahogany and the back ground is chocolate also from fiebings. and the rest is done with eco flo medium brown antique. Rick
