I started making a skiving knife today. If I'm going to be making knives, I have to work with leather and a good skiving knife is a critical tool to have. I could have just as easily bought one but this is much more fun. I have a large piece of bandsaw blade from an old wood sawmill. I got it cut to shape and ground out. Then started the tedious task of sanding all the rust off. I got the handles roughed out and the pin holes drilled in the handle and in the blank. Then go it sanded to 800 grit. I don't know if I want to go much further. I don't have a buffer. Its on the list though.

Seeking a skiver with at least a 2' throat (50mm) I already own a clutch motor but would possibly be interested in a table and motor combo. But would also be interested in just a head unit. Please contact or refer me to anyone in the Pacific Northwest. Im in Portland OR. Thanks!

Greetings folks! I need help identifying this machine by Randall Machine Corp. What it does and what parts it's missing and hopefully where to get them. It was once set up to run by motor, with no clutch and a fairly high gear ratio.

Can Anybody Identify The Maker Of This Bech Splitter?

Does anyone recognize this splitter? Can anyone tell e who made it? Do they make them still? Looks like it may be a one-off made in a machine shop, but made darn well! If I cannot find a maker nor any patent or licensing info on it, I may start having them reproduced. I have a great machinist here in town who can fabricate all the parts and will grind the blades, and one of the best blade makers/swordsmiths in the country is right here in town too(K.C. Lund) and he can do the heat treat on the 01 steel blades. We can even offer pattern welded (Damascus) blades if anyone wants to pay a ridiculous amount for one Let me know if y'all are interested, so I can look into whether or not it will be worthwhile to have these cranked out. -
I'm learning leather work and am interested to buy a skiving machine. I've looked at many online- Chinese, Italian, etc. What is the difference between bottom feed vs. top and bottom feed? I'm doing mostly bags and belts but want a machine that can grow with my skill set and interests. Does a heavy duty machine do lightweight to mid-weight material as well as a medium duty machine? Heavy duty machines seem to cost more. Do I pony up for a heavy duty machine so that I have that range in the future even though I don't need it now? What would you all buy? Is there a big difference between a Consew, Econosew or Cobra at $1,200 or thereabouts and a new Fortuna SM-50 or FAV AV2 for 4-5k? I'm interested to get a good machine and am willing to pay the price but wonder if it is necessary. What would you all buy?

Have several ways to sew light to heavy material, What is the best NEXT choice for the $$$ spent,, Skiver,,,, strap cutter,, splitter,,,Riveter looking to increase return on time and output,, not doing saddles, or holsters, but headed down the path of belt making, tack repair, and bag construction,chaps, limited tooling , not in a particular order, but as demand requires and the mind wonders skiver best first choice ??,,offers many ways to cleanly finish and fold as well as flex for bag corners?? strap cutter clearly increases production of belts, tack and long items.. hand cutting right now ?? splitter makes doubling layers easy to get thickness desired ?? Rivet setter makes setting easy as well as adding decorative spots and bling,, hammering them now ??? All will be needed at some point, but what is the path you have taken and why?? and how have you done some of your work and bypassed the investment and made things work?? as well as what your focus is,,,thanks David
