  1. I've been Surfing on YouTube over the past couple of weeks as I'm thinking of making a kiridashi (a small Japanese knife), and I'm always interested in seeing any methods of sharpening I came across this video, using home made knives from old hacksaw blades, and they certainly look pretty good 'The Best Leather Cutting Knife' by Leathertoolz The guy obviously knows his stuff, and he's done lots of other videos, on Japanese leather knives, awls, sharpening, and various reviews of other leather tools
  2. Hi all, Here are a pair of kitchen knives and sheaths, made as Christmas presents for my parents. Originally I had planned for them to have different sheaths but simply ran out of time to design something new, so they are the same except for a subtle colour change on the borders. For an outdoor belt knife I would have added a welt or put the seam down the centre on the back, but as this is just to protect the edge while they sit in a drawer or something I think the simpler design shouldn't be a problem and I doubt there is much chance of them slicing through the stitches. The tooling is of course some Western swirly acanthus stuff, and due to the lack of belt loops is on both sides. Stitching is by hand and is with waxed linen. For anyone interested in the knives themselves, they are both hand forged from 1080 high carbon steel, with cocobolo grips and sheet brass bolsters which extend down the tang. A little more time would have been preferable really but overall quite happy with the end results. I hope you like them and Happy Christmas everyone! Alex
  3. OK, so I purchased a new head knife from an online retailer for C.S.Osborne. Literally the first chance to try it out, while stropping the handle came off in my hand. Contacted the retailer and no warranty. 30 days is all. Yes, I have had the knife for 8 months but never even took it out of the wrapper. My bad I guess for really not doing a complete inspection. Just wanted to inform members to look at what the are buying and inspect. Do not want anyone to spend money on inferior products. I am sure I can fix it, yet. I am sure the steel is quality, I have a lot of other tools from Osborne and never have had a problem.
  4. Are 'Head knife' and 'Round knife' two alternative names for the same thing, or is there a difference between them?
  5. Anyone have anything they’d be willing to part with? Old or modern.. thanks!
  6. Just finished these as well as a group of knives.
  7. I have a collection of old leather knives and would like to add more to it. If anyone has any of this type of knife they are willing to part with please let me know. The only one that I do not require is the one at the bottom L'indespensable from France, which I have(2). Some of these knives were originally used as marking or striking knives, but easily converted by sharpening to either left or right hand use. In the first photo I am looking for the top two and the third from the bottom, the second photo I am looking for either of these the top one I believe to be a Norris from the UK. Any unusual mill knife with adjustable blade ( brass & rosewood ) Thanks Keith keithandco@shaw.ca
  8. I'm just getting started in leather working and I've got questions about cutting. Some of the shapes I'm needing have curves and angles. I'm using 8-9oz leather and a husky razor knife. I'm having trouble following my trace and leaving little cut "burrs" when I have to re-cut over a line due to thickness or not staying in the line. 1. Can someone recommend a different tool or method? 2. Will an edge slicker sufficiently smooth those cut burrs? Thanks for any help.
  9. Hi guys thanks for checking my listing out! i have a great collection of hand tools that i have collected for my use but unfortunately do to my current health reasons i must sell them all, i can not do the leather work i truly love any more, there for everything is up for grabs. i always like the but the highest quality of tools and materials so here is the list, before you read any further you should know, it is a PACKAGE DEAL, i WILL NOT split anything up, because of my health reasons i simply do not have the will to do so. according to my estimation i have SPENT about $3800 for these tools and such but i am only asking $1525 including shipping anywhere in the USA, sorry no international shipping. i will only accept USPS money order or Paypal as a payment option. i have not posted on Ebay yet, i wanted to give the users of this forum the first chance because i love this forum and i surely learned alot of things here and met a lot of awesome people. please do not be shy to message me with any question you might have, thanks and take care. P.S. if you are willing to pick them up in person and pay me in cash, i will deduct the shipping expense (abviously) and i have a large mystery box of goodies for u. 31 BARRY KING stamps, seeders, bevelers... 10. Hello, friends. I introduce knives to you. Knives made of brass, assembled on two bearings. I do any design. The price is from 120 to 210 $. If you want, i can make a gold-plated knife.
  11. Sabatier are best known for kitchen knives, but I've just found out that there is a marking knife called a 'Sabatier Ebony Knife', looking very much like a Japanese kiridashi knife. I reckon it could make a decent leather knife I have no doubt that the quality will be up to the usual standards, so the price is reasonable for what you get I have several leather knives, but I might just treat myself to an early Christmas present Sorry, but I can't get a link to work so you'll have to Search yourself
  12. I've been looking at Japanese Leather Knives on Google, they look interesting. They all seem to be asymmetric, with the tang set off to one side of the blade, usually the right when the bevel is facing towards you; is there any reason for that? I have the blade from an old block plane, and I was thinking of turning it into a sort of Japanese style leather knife. Is there any reason why I should not make it symmetric?
  13. Hi all just a question for some of you guys with more knowledge of let her working knives i am currently cutting all my leather project out with small razor knives and scissors if I wanted to invest in a good set of knives just for leather work what would be my "basic starter set " of various knives ( ones to last a long time ) and where would be the best place to get them?
  14. We get a lot of interest on leatherworker.net about the subjects of knifemaking and sharpening. This applies to pretty much all leather edged tools. This forum is here to collect all of this information for use by those who want to know sharp from dull, and from screaming (or bleeding) sharp to just adequate. I will be your forum sponsor and moderator, as such, I am pretty freewheeling, and will participate as much as needed and also as much as possible. We have a lot of well known knifemakers and sheathmakers who lurk in the other forums and who I hope will find a home here. I got into leatherworking because I needed sheaths for my knives; and nobody ever made one for me that I liked. I also got into sharpening when a few of my friends in the food service industry asked me to teach them how to sharpen; it went crazy from there. I was doing that after work and on weekends to the point where I couldn't take on any more work. So come on aboard and ask questions or whatever, help when you can, everyone needs to learn. Art
  15. I have one of the small 3" Stohlman round knives from Tandy which I love the size but it's hell to keep it sharp enough to cut patterns out for holsters and such. Every 3-6 inches of cutting I have to restrop. One of my friends told me I should look at Greyghost or LR knives but both are well over a $100 and being on disability makes that price is a bit much for my budget. I am selling stuff but it's very hit and miss and not very consistent yet. I know Zack White tends to have good prices on tools and being from my home state of NC I try to send money there way when I can. They have 2 different Osborne knives one grey handle and a bigger one that has a wooden handle. The guy that guns a mobile knife sharpening business told type of metal is key with round knives. Cheap metal from the Middle East won't hold an edge for this type of work and will have to be ground daily. He carbon steel is the best which I doubt I can afford right now but something out there has to be in a more affordable price range. Any thoughts? The Osborne knives at Zack White are $50 and $65
  16. First time poster, here. Does anyone know what makes the indented lines above and below the card slits? Is it a special tool and if so does anyone know what it is? Thanks!
  17. Hello, I was wondering what is the best tool to cut tight curves with? I'm using an x-acto knife with a no. 11 blade, a rotary cutter, leather sheers, and a standard utility blade. I'm having difficulty cutting tight curves into 3oz. leather. Is there a tool that would be a better fit for these types of cuts? Or is this just a skill level issue?
  18. Hi there, My name is Tim McDaniel and you have guessed correctly. I am new to this stuff. What do I need to do the SCA stuff and Guns and Knife Sheaths. I do some leather work with Scissors and brass rivets. Please help me out. Oh please, help me out. Thanks, Tim McDaniel
