Bert03241 Report post Posted June 12, 2023 I have a piece of deerskin with what looks like mold , it doesn't smell moldy but has blotches of light blue discoloration . Killing the mold is pretty easy with Vinegar or Hydrogen Peroxide but will it damage the skin? and How to you get rid of the discoloration? I want to line a purse with it

Dwight Report post Posted June 12, 2023 I would do "what ya gotta do" in order to kill the mold. I understand that borax is also a mold killer . . . and being a dry powder like chemical . . . "may" do less discoloration. Then dye the thing dark enough to overcome any discoloration. May God bless, Dwight
Northmount Report post Posted June 12, 2023 I have removed mold from vegtan cowhide with liquid saddle soap followed by bleaching with oxalic acid. 1 teaspoon to a pint of clean water. Whether effective for deerskin, maybe test on a small piece first.
tsunkasapa Report post Posted June 12, 2023 Be aware that you can wash deerskin in the washing machine. I wash my buckskins at the end of each rondy season. Wash cold with laundry SOAP, not detergent. Tumble in the dryer with no heat or hang dry on a good breezy day. You will need to do some stretching after it's dry. Bert03241 Report post Posted June 12, 2023 Thanks Guys I think I'll try just washing first see how that works then go on to other methods if that doesn't work.
