I'm just curious-especially as to the current economic and political environment. How many of you (us) have (either) conceal or open carry licenses? Although I don't think it has anything to do with the economy. Just a persons right to carry a weapon. My cousin puts on the classes and he is always full. I don't carry one just because sometimes my temper gets the better of me. And I don't want to spend the $125.00 Although I would carry one on a trip with or with out a license. Lui Report post Posted March 4, 2009 I have a ccw permit and carry about 99% of the time. But then again I live in Miami. I also tell people that my belt and holster combos are so comfortable that I carry a Glock 30 on my hip for around 16 hours a day and its true. I am an NRA instructor too and teach the classes required to obtain your permit. Right now in Florida they are so backlogged that they are hiring another 60 people to the department just to keep up with demand. They expect to have issued here over 600,000 permits by midyear. I am waiting for issuance of my Utah permit which will give me the right to carry concealed in 30 some states including Ohio which will be quite valuable to me. I expect it any day as I took the training in late December. For many years I had a Florida CCW until I moved from Florida to Illinois. I carry everyday, everywhere that it is legal to carry. I carry a Springfield Armory XD-45 Compact (.45 ACP) and either a Ruger SP-101 (.357 Magnum) or a Keltec P3AT (.380) as backup. I also carry pepper spray to defuse less than lethal situations... something much more likely than use of deadly force situations. I do not carry because of the current economic situation. I carry because of the general crime situation which was plenty bad when times were good and won't be any better when times are bad. In Buffalo in 2007, there were 8 murders within .6 mile of my home with 2 of them on my street in separate events! There were 14 murders within 2 miles of the house. It can be pretty hairy around here. Anyway... I do not wish to be a helpless victim begging for mercy or pleading for my life from a felon. I believe that I have the right to defend myself with the same level of force that may be brought to bear against me. So I like to stay pretty well armed. Been that way since the early 90's. Our left-wing local newspaper printed a complete list of all permit holders around Memphis/Shelby County aa couple of weeks ago and that opened the floodgates! Personally, I have a carry permit (its called a badge and law enforcement commission) As a public servant, anyone can find out who I am. As a private citizen, I and a whole lot of others don't think the paper should have gone to the time and trouble to find the list and then publish it for all the neer do wells to see. It only includes your name and zip code now but when it first came out, it included your address, too. If you don't have a carry permit, GET ONE. If you don't own a firearm, BUY SEVERAL while you still can! (And lots of ammo!) I'm not parinoid, just want to be prepared. ArtS Report post Posted March 5, 2009 I've had my license for a few years now. My wife just got her in the mail today! I never thought she would carry. I'm teaching her to shoot. Taking a class in GA is not required but I took one years ago and I'm also going to a class with my wife at the end of this month. She needed it and I figure I can always learn something new and can use the practice. I've gone shooting with my dad since I was a kid (I'll be 53 this year). I usually don't carry but feel more and more that I should. I always wear it riding now. Too many nuts in the woods. As a matter of fact I'm looking at buying another pistol. I'm thinking about getting the Taurus PT1911 in SS. Any thoughts? I notice a lot of folks have Glocks. I really like the style and feel of the PT1911. My carry weapon now is a Makarov 380. I really like it. I also have a S&W 9mm that I can carry. I saw a t-shirt at a gun show that said "If you know how many guns you have then you don't have enough." I love it! WHen I was in VA there were a bunch of cops that got in trouble for arresting or taking guns from people that were open carry because they didnt know any better (know the law if your gonna enforce it right....). Several times people had cops called on them by others when they were open carry. For the OP I have a ccw and carry when I know I dont have to go on base. HARRYB that is just wrong, I cant believe they allowed that to get printed. Thats like something they would do to a sex offender. Im serprised that paper didnt get a law suit against it. Jordan Report post Posted March 5, 2009 Open carry is legal in Utah but most of the public and more than a few law enforcement officers are not that familiar with the law and that has on occasion caused some confusion. I do not have a permit yet but am going to get one when I have the money. Being from SoCal originally, I am still amazed that the closer to hunting season it gets the more my neighborhood transforms into an armed camp. Stats I read recently were that 1 in 5 in public are armed in Utah. Reminds me of another stat that is a bit more of a concern to me, 1 in 5 drivers at any time day or night, on the freeway are impaired by drugs or alcohol. The license here only cost $195.00 total and takes 90 days to recieve it after the OSBI gets your ap. I think its pretty cheap insurance! Well, although Texas law considers one's vehicle like one's residence for the purpose of concealed carry, [Texas Penal Code Ch. 46.02(a)(2)] , I don't normally feel the need where I go. I almost never drive at night in bad neighborhoods or go to taverns or hang out at the local stop-n-rob. Interesting twist to it, though. The handgun must be concealed in your vehicle. [Ch.46.02(a-1)(1)]. However, I was shocked, SHOCKED I tell ya, when I moved down here and looked up the concealed carry license info. I couldn't believe how damn ridiculous it has become in a State that still believes it's a Republic.... Hell, it was easier and a lot cheaper in that Liberal bastian of Washington State! I mean not everyone can wrestle a croc or charm a viper every time they need to go to the store. We voted on it a couple of times but the damn darn liberals here are coming out of the woodwork! Of course that doesn't mean I don't have an arsenal in my home Last summer we had company from New Zealand, where handguns are illegal (unless you are licensed, and belong to a shooting club). We took our guests out with all the handguns and rifles we own, and a whole bunch of ammo, and spent the entire day introducing them to a new way of having fun. Washroad Report post Posted March 5, 2009 (edited) I live in Orange County and we just got a new Sheriff. She's busy revoking as many CC permits as she can. Considering that there are 3 million people in this county, only 1500 had permits (1 in every 2000 people) and she's revoking them. A couple of cities here have a pretty bad gang/murder problem but that doesn't seem to concern her. I can carry a weapon in my car provided it's unloaded and the ammunition is locked up somewhere like in the trunk. I drive a pickup so I guess I have to put a lock box in the bed of the truck. So now if I get assaulted, I can ask them to wait while I get my key and unlock my ammo box. The thing is, then firing in public is illegal here. When I travel in my motorhome in this state, I can carry under the same restrictions. When I park, shut off the engine and remove the keys from the ignition, the motorhome becomes my residence and I can have a loaded weapon and defend myself. I know when I'm breaking the law and will take full responsibility for myself if caught. I do not advocate breaking the law by any means. The "Law Enforcement Officer's Safety Act" (18 US Code 926B and 926C) was signed into law by George Bush in 2004. It allows any current or retired law enforcement officer to carry concealed weapons in ANY state without a state-issued permit. There's some requirements... -You must be, or have been, a law enforcement officer that was allowed to carry a firearm. -If you are retired, you must have been on active duty with a law enforcement agency for at least 15 years. -You must qualify with your firearm yearly, even after being retired. -You must carry your LEO credentials, and if retired, a letter stating you've qualified within the past 12 months. Some are restricted to Possession Only or Hunting/Target or Business Only. You can't carry outside of your restriction. An unrestricted permit allows 24/7 carry in any place legal to carry. That excludes NY City which issues its own permits. I live in Erie county and it is quite difficult to get an unrestricted permit in this county. In the next county... Niagara... it is quite easy. In the bad counties like Erie, you have to prove a substantial need to carry a handgun concealed. I did so and got the unrestricted. It took over a half hour of arguing my case to an Asst. Supreme Court Justice. It wasn't easy. You have to be very well prepared and a little lucky. It should not be that way, but in NY it is... and there is nothing you can do about it. It has saved my life more than once, but not against humans - against DOMESTIC DOGS. People let their dogs run loose, they pack up... and it can be a bad thing. Pretty much everyone in my "neighborhood" (an area of about 1,000 square miles) is very well armed. Perhaps because of this, people leave each other alone for the most part. I have to say, I don't get the "darned liberals" comment. All the liberals I know have guns. Every last one. That would include me, and Mr. Horsehair Braider.
