What is the reason some machines will stich in reverse, and what are the benefits? Or am I confused about what reverse means in regard to sewing machines? I do get confused easily, or so I'm told. Thanks.

All of us get confused sooner or later.

The reverse is used to sew 2 or 3 stitches over ones already sewn to "Lock" the stitch.

I like to start a distance equal to three stitches away from beginning point. Put machine in reverse, stitch three stitches then go forward to complete your stitching. When the machine is adjusted correctly the stitches will fall in the same holes.

Thanks. So if one doesn't have reverse, would you just turn the work around after the last stich and re-stich over the last stiches? I ask, because there is a new GA5-1 at a local shop for $800. Says it has a cosmetic flaw. Just wondering if I should spend the extra cash for a reverse model.

Reverse, . . . in a nutshell, . . . is a time saver, . . . almost extrordinaire !

Without it, . . . you turn the piece, . . . or hand stitch, . . . or force the machine to re-do them one at a time.

With reverse, . . . it's done as quick as you can flip the lever and make the stitches.

Also, . . . there are some "fancy" things reverse is especially well suited for: stitched decorations such as on belts, . . . sewing cartridge loops on gun belts, . . . doing applique work on chaps or chinks or purses, . . .

I have survived without it for several years, . . . will probably continue to do so, . . . but I have found "Dwight" ways to do those things I need reverse for.

May God bless,

Dwight

The reverse also helps me stitch very close to the buckle or belt keeper on my dog collars...
