gracefulmeg Report post Posted November 14, 2016 Love this . How did you do the gradual fade on the edges?
venator Report post Posted November 14, 2016 I airbrushed the whole thing with Fiebings British Tan, then hit the edges with the airbrush and usmc black. Then I rubbed it all down with carnauba cream from Tandy. However I usually use the tandy waterstains which absorb super well from teh airbrush where as the usmc black sat a lot of particles on the surface so they rubbed around a bit which caused a bit of a dirtying effect which as it turns out I quite liked. bdpeters Report post Posted November 14, 2016 (edited) nice idea for scrap. I love how you used the smaller strap for attachment. I would like to try the same idea for an archery arm guard. Edited November 14, 2016 by bdpeters

Hey, Another way to get that fade or sunburst is to start with a diluted dye and cover the entire piece. Next, let it dry and buff out the leather. Then, keep applying coats of the dye from the edge to the center with a paint brush. Make sure that most of the dye it absorbed on the edges and lightly feather to the center. Repeat this a few times and buff from time to time and you will achieve the same result. VT

VT That sounds painful, I'll stick to the airbrush. That having been said it's good to know the different ways as not every project can be done with my airbrush. snubbyfan Report post Posted November 18, 2016 I like it. I usta sculpt and airbrush. Haven't used my airbrush since I started messin' with leather. I may just havta try it for doin' some dye work. I like that effect, it'd look good on a holster.
GaryB Report post Posted November 18, 2016 Love the sunburst effect, I have had a airbrush for over 30 years that I have never used, looks like I found something to finally use it on.

I've had this one for about 2 years and we just never pulled it out. In the mean time I've had all sorts of issues getting dyes to be consistent, even, applying resoline without washing away some of the dye etc etc and now with an airbrush everything is awesome. GaryB Report post Posted November 18, 2016 I have been wondering about using the airbrush to create that very effect, now with your post, I'll be dusting off that dandy little tool!
