Length dosent matter really. You just cut it off anyways. So look for your diameter and get the longest ones. You can always make shorter but adding length is impossible. Big Sioux Saddlery Report post Posted March 10, 2017 I don't know about Montana Leather, but Weaver has as small as a #14 copper rivet with burrs. They are pretty dang small, in fact I only rarely ever use them. They also have a #12, which I use occasionally. I can get measurements later if you want, or maybe someone else knows what the specs are on those.
Northmount Report post Posted March 10, 2017 Copper rivets, wire, etc. sizes are defined as AWG, American Wire Gauge. There is more info than you ever want to know here. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_wire_gauge. Scroll down and you will find a table cross referencing # and diameters. I tend to use #9 for heavy stuff, #12, and rarely #14. You can look up availability at your local Tandy Leather I you are so inclined. Nice to be able to pick it up today instead of waiting several days for shipment. Also make sure you know how to install the rivets. My first attempt was a disaster! So practice on a couple pieces of scrap first. Also do a search here and you will find lots of suggestions. The minimum tools are a punch, an angle cutters (side cutters or nippers), an anvil or other hard solid surface, and a ball peen hammer. Not recommended to use your granite or marble slab as an anvil. Tom
Big Sioux Saddlery Report post Posted March 10, 2017 That's interesting, Tom. I always wondered if #9 wire was the same as #9 rivets, but it seems like #14 rivets are a little heavier than #14 fence wire. Not that I've ever put the two side by side for comparison or measured with a dial caliper. Always learning something here! Thanks!
utah leather Report post Posted March 10, 2017 Thanks Tom, the rivets that my Tandy store has are to big for my knife/ marker, pencil holder that I wear on my belt for my full time job. ( I install granite counter tops ) so this is why I have to find another source ( what a pain ) Thanks for the advice on the tools, I actually went to a metal supply store and bought an I- beam about 2 feet long to use as my anvil because I couldn't find a used one at a good price and I have the rest of the tools. I have to have some of my tools for my belts hand made from a guy in Salt Lake City, utah because all these leather working tools are chinese crap and fall apart so easy. Thanks again, John
