Members Chipperi Posted August 16, 2017 Members Report Posted August 16, 2017 I just made a bracelet out of a scrap piece of 8oz. I have heard of people using olive oil as a finish. It actually gives a very nice russet color. Quote
NVLeatherWorx Posted August 16, 2017 Report Posted August 16, 2017 Yes, it does. However, be careful with Olive Oil as it can result in over oiling really easy. If you want to give it a bit of darker shade set it out in the sun after oiling it and watch it tan, literally. Sun tanned leather is a unique looking thing. Quote
Members kiwican Posted August 17, 2017 Members Report Posted August 17, 2017 I've also heard that bugs like it. Food grade !not sure if that's true or not Quote
Members Colt W Knight Posted August 17, 2017 Members Report Posted August 17, 2017 I have used 100% extra virgin olive oil for nearly 20 years on horse tack and Ive never seen any bug issues. Quote
Members kiwican Posted August 17, 2017 Members Report Posted August 17, 2017 Nice. I'll give it a shot Quote
Members gigi Posted August 17, 2017 Members Report Posted August 17, 2017 (edited) I have heard of people using olive oil instead of neatsfoot oil but not as a finish (prior to finishing). Edited August 17, 2017 by gigi Quote

I was wondering if the oil would become rancid after time. Do you notice any peculiar odour with your work after using it for treating? Quote

The US Calvary used Olive Oil and Castor Oil mix, the castor oil gave the saddles a water resistant property. Quote
