Olive oíl as a finish

Recommended Posts

I just made a bracelet out of a scrap piece of 8oz. I have heard of people using olive oil as a finish. It actually gives a very nice russet color.

Yes, it does.  However, be careful with Olive Oil as it can result in over oiling really easy.  If you want to give it a bit of darker shade set it out in the sun after oiling it and watch it tan, literally.  Sun tanned leather is a unique looking thing.

I have used 100% extra virgin olive oil for nearly 20 years on horse tack and Ive never seen any bug issues.

I have heard of people using olive oil instead of neatsfoot oil but not as a finish (prior to finishing).

I was wondering if the oil would become rancid after time. Do you notice any peculiar odour with your work after using it for treating?

Extra Virgin Olive oil will not become rancid like other vegetable oils. The US Calvary used Olive Oil and Castor Oil mix, the castor oil gave the saddles a water resistant property.
