WTB Phase Converter

Recommended Posts

We just bought a 3-phase clicker but it looks like our store only has single phase. Looking for a Phase-a-matic R5 or some similar type of rotary phase converter.

You may also want to consider an inverter.  There are several other brands as well.

We needed one for our mill, luckily we have 220 single phase search the net found direction how to make one using a 3phase motor with more  hp the then what your 3-phase motor has.I did have some trouble starting the converter motor so I took a single phase 110v to get it spinning, hit the 220v switch. We've used now for 10yrs.The converter motor needs to be delta wound.

Just curious, as I AM NOT AN ELECTRICIAN, but would a more stout starter capacitor have spun it up better? That is probably a stupid question, but in all the years I've dealt with motors, I've never dealt with an inverter or phase converter. I've seen one, that's about it.

No idea where you’re located, but there’s a Phase-a-matic R5 for sale for $650 on my local Craigslist (SF Bay Area). I agree, an RPC would be a good choice for a clicker, simple, rugged and no need for speed control.

Phase converters are available new for less than $400.

Inverters are even less.

I snagged an R5 off of eBay for $200+$100 shipping. My clicker repair guy had recommended it for the style of machine we have which is why I chose it. He's the one who has to hook it up so I just went with his recommendation.

I built up an RPC out of mostly demo’ed and surplus parts. NEMA size 1 starter, 277v 3-pole contactor  (pulls in fine on 220), some old Allen-Bradley momentary switches, 5hp 3-phase motor, used enclosure and disconnects. I did buy new capacitors though. Admittedly, I have better access than most to industrial electrical equipment, but you can build a simple RPC for not too much money.

Most of this is moot now that VFDs and “static” converters are commonly available, and you can have speed control to boot!

Advantages of an RPC are simplicity, durability and the ability to power an entire ship off of one device (what I do).

Just my 2c worth
