What glue ?

Hi there,

first I like to thank You all for the awful lot of information. :)))

 

I am busy a bit with leather and I like doing belts.

Now I saw one belt with leather lining, which I like very much.

The lining is glued in and the belt is sewed together later on.

I have been asking some guys already, but there was no clear answer.

What glue should I take for this work?

What is Your opinion ?

The white one rubber water based glue or should it be  leather zement ?

I thought, due to wearing the belt, a flexible glue would be great, but maybe You have a better idea ?

Contact cement. Barge's or weldwood. There are some that have less odor, but I haven't tried them.

What Mutt said. My belt is 8oz lined with 5oz. Still flexible but hold it shape. And I carry a gun on it every day.

Contact cement of one sort or another is the way to go.  As Mutt mentioned, Barge  or Weldwood(technically a wood contact cement) will work very well.  

Some have been reporting very good results using Renia Aquilim GL and 315 which are water-based contact cements.  It's a little hard to get in hobby quantities in the USA, but it's a German brand and may be easier for you to get there!

I have used the contact cement exclusively until very recently. I tried the Renia aquilim 315, and find the contact cement to be superior. The aquilim GL is the contact cement version of Renia, and it may be better, I haven't tried that. When the weather warms up around here I may order some of that.

i used this renia aquilium 315 on m machine sewn goods..The only Problem is it came apart very quickly. This was very frustrating because I messed up some of my edges. is this because I tried to glue it before it was completely dry and it was used on the shiny top side and m edges we’re not sanded.?

Any tips guys and gals....of can I use other glues for machine sewn goods?

You definitely need to rough up smooth leather or NO glue will ever hold it. And be patient and give it time to dry.

Hi Roland and welcome to Leatherworker!

is what I would use. Barge's or any other contact cement certainly work, but Hirschkleber is all natural and doesn't have the awful smell of the solvent based cements. Also, a little goes along way; that 600g tub will last you for a long time. I've had mine for ten years and it's not even half gone. If it turns thick over time, just mix a little water in it.

I also second what Mattsbagger said above!
