KingsCountyLeather Report post Posted April 15, 2018 Hi, I purchased some leather from a shoe factory yesterday and the guy threw in this bag stiffener and said you iron it to the back side of the leather. It is quite flexible now but he said it stiffens more when ironed. Has anyone seen it before? Sheet size is 101cm x 144cm, it has fibre feelto one side and shiny plastic tho the other. baroness Report post Posted April 15, 2018 Is it similar to what is used as fabric interfacing? From the picture and description it sounds similar. Although the adhesive might be different,

Although the adhesive might be different, And how is yours applied? If you can give me as much information as possible I’d appreciate it? The material I have is less than 1mm thick. Looks like it would be a great addition to leather bag making. I can’t find much on google about it. I also know a lot of people improvise with other materials and maybe they’d like to know more also. Thanks.
baroness Report post Posted April 15, 2018 Fabric stores in the US call it interfacing. It is used to make collars, cuffs and other parts stiffer. There are a number of different kinds depending on how much stiffening you want. It can be either sewn in or fused with an iron. I didn't know it was used in leather working as I wouldn't have thought you'd iron leather. I’m sure I can iron it on from the back using a fabric and then covering it with another piece of leather... Some times adding just a little bit of stiffness to the leather is enough. baroness Report post Posted April 17, 2018 Depending on what you're making and how, you might not need to fuse it on. You might be able to sandwich it between. Or use multiple layers. They also have something called bag stiffener.
motocouture Report post Posted April 17, 2018 (edited) Joann’s stocks fusible interfacing, Pellon brand, link below. Not sure if they ship internationally. Just be careful you don’t iron the wrong side....hypothetically a friend of mine did that once.....also, I’ve found that a low to medium heat works best, absolutely no steam or your leather won’t be happy afterwards. http://www.joann.com/search?q=pellon fusible Edited April 17, 2018 by motocouture

If one is, say, distracted, and forgets that the slightly bumpy side has the fusible glue, puts it upside down on the fabric, and starts ironing. Then you get to peel the gooey mess off the plate of your iron lol.
bermudahwin Report post Posted April 18, 2018 Or you have to clean the glue from your wife's iron, when she uses I on clothes she is making.... It may be sold as Vilene if it was from the footwear industry, cannot recall the other trade names. Harry
