A leather bottle? yes?

Over here a 'canteen' can mean many things, such as all the things needed to eat a dinner, eg cutlery, glasses, plates . . . .

Ok. so I'm only teasing ya!  :lol:

But a leather water/wine flask type thingy.

As long as you don't want to see it too soon I'll try making one. I've been wanting to make a sort-of copy of one from the ship Mary Rose

The original;

Mary Rose flask, 04LWs.jpg

And someone else's reproduction of it;

Mary Rose flask, 01LWs.jpg

It involves some wet moulding, so I'll have to set to to make the buck but I'll not be doing it exactly as that other person did it

2. What do you seal the insides with?

The cordwainer out at our rendezvous used hot melted wax, pour in, soak a bit, pour out.  It didn't crack when the leather flexed 'a bit'.

Thanks. I should clarify, it holds 4 cups. I stretch them out with un-popped popcorn. I ASSUME that it holds 32oz of liquid as well.

After they are dry I saturate them with a blend of beeswax and paraffin. After that they get a final "lining" of brewers pitch.

Is it lined with something, or just leather on water?  Nicely done, btw.

Those are beautiful! Wow.

A coating of beeswax and then brewers pitch? That's interesting. I'm curious as to why you think the beeswax is needed. I would think that the pitch would be tough on it's own.

Also, if you don't mind me asking, who are you buying your brewers pitch from? I've had trouble sourcing it from sellers who keep it in stock .

Thanks. The wax fills the fibers of the leather, the pitch is mostly for the seams. Caulking the seams so to speak.

I've been getting the pith from Townsends.

Be advised that alcohol will dissolve the brewers pitch, ruining the flavor of your favorite beverage.

aw, bummer,

But what was the difference to the Brewers Pitch in Tudor & medieval times as the jacks have shown traces of wine or beer having been stored in them

Wine and beer are not as "solvent"  as whiskey, vodka etc. I have used cheap vodka to remove the labels from newly installed windows.

I have plenty of pine trees out back.  I will use the pine resin with nothing added except maybe a bug or 2

From my research you can indeed carry spirits in these.  You can not store spirits in them {Or so I am told}    SO, Drink up me mates. We can not let this rum sit in here all day. we must do our best to empty this jug

Yes would not like a good drop of Gold Watch or a fine Cognac go to waste. Nice pieces of work there.

"brewers pitch" Is that a fancy way of saying" you'll be too damn drunk to know what you're doing?"  Like, .... keep missing the end of the stamping tool with your mallet and hitting your thumb instead?

Sorry Frodo,  off topic  :)

I wonder if a gourd can be covered in leather?...hmmm   :Lighten:   I'd like to see that  :)

You may want to do some searching on here - somebody did a post about beeswax/pitch/epoxy for a mug on here a few years ago.  They had done some research on food grade epoxies for just this sort of thing. If I remember right, they had even researched epoxy for alcohol resistance, and even high temp for coffee, etc.

Thanks,  i did actually spend a few hows in that rabbit hole.

Beer and wine are OK IF They are in the bag for the day, not to be stored in the bag

hard booze is out,  you can not put it in he bag. As far as I can tell. no research has been done, that I can find  on the hard booze,

I have made one bag And picked up a commission to make 10 for a vendor at a renaissance festival

Raw bag,, not dyd or treated
