Price quotes from UK suppliers

Recommended Posts

Hello.

I recently contacted a business asking for the price of a particular type of leather. I was quoted a price per square foot. I asked them to confirm the price quoted included VAT. They said it did.

However, upon ordering the leather I learnt from the invoice that VAT was added to the price I'd been quoted. This came as a bit of a shock to me. Especially in combination with the leather being much larger than the average size I'd been informed of.

Is it typical for UK suppliers to give price quotes excluding VAT?

Thanks.

Scott

I can only say for Le Prevo - always VAT added at the bottom of the invoice after even the delivery charge added. Prices on their website are minus VAT. When ordering from Le Prevo I always tell them the maximum and minimum square footage I want or the approx, eg I'll tell them I need at least 15 but no more that about 18,  or I need about 16 or 17. They've always come through for me

Maybe not including VAT in the price quote is customary in Blighty.

Yes, especially places geared towards trade sales rather than hobbyists. Annoying for sure, especially when they told you the reverse. To be fair it's not unusual -- Homebase (retail) will advertise all their prices including, ABC Builders Yard (trade) will advertise exclusive and Screwfix (both) will advertise both.

Thanks Matt S. Something else I've learned!

Regarding leather purchase, I have little experience of it so find it hard to judge if I'm getting good value for money. I realize leather, being skin, will vary in quality from hide to hide. And also that it is probable there will be small areas of damage through carelessness and accident prior to it arriving upon my doorstep.

This quote was it by phone call or email, and do they have a web - site because if they do have a web - site just put what you want into your shopping cart go to check out the V A T will be added well it should be then you will see what you will be paying in the long run all if you think its to much empty cart. Yes it is standard practice for suppliers who are trading with tradesmen and the general public to have prices being shown less V A T.

Hope this helps

Not unless its being sold to you as 'damaged' and priced accordingly.  All leather suppliers should be treating their leathers with care. With Le Prevo I've bought 2nd quality, or damaged or leather with scars from them in their discounted list and I know what I'm getting. All other leathers were first rate, blemish and damage free

Its normal for B2B sellers to not show VAT in prices as the buyer will be able to claim back the VAT paid for private buyers you need to follow JCUK post above

Unfortunately first time buyers get stung the first time
