Leather Weight for Lined Holsters.
Thadrick replied to Latigo Smith's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
I've seen a video of a builder tooling and carving then gluing the liner on (flat). Then he went about by slightly bending it wet and letting it hang balanced over a 1.5" dowel over night to dry. Hanging over the dowel allowed the leather to bend slowly while drying. It wasn't completely bent when dry but was close enough that it reduced wrinkles when he bent it the rest of the way. I haven't tried it but it makes sense that it would work? My experience with a thinner liner seems to reduces wrinkling, just don't rush the bending process and be sure it's laminated very well (extra glue is good). -

I can’t seem to edit the post on my phone. I’ll try from a computer tomorrow. I’d prefer not to ship but I will if someone wants to pay for it, any of these will have to go LTL, I do work in a warehouse so I can accommodate palletizing any of them. -
Hi leatherworkers, I have a Vilh Pedersen 308 sole stitcher. Unfortunately it is near impossible to stitch in a straight line and I suspect it may be because a previous owner seems to have “modified” the foot, possibly to get a bit more space for the needle to go into the leather without hitting the foot. Subsequently the 2nd row of teeth are missing from one side as well a about 1.5mm in width of the toe part. So I have two questions: [1] Am I correct in believing that the toes on the presser foot, that is the section with the ridges that move the leather forward are supposed to be equal in size, shape therefore perfectly symmetrical and able to move the stitches in a straight line? [2] Is there any way to rectify this problem of poor stitching as I doubt anybody has a spare presser foot to sell or is it possible to have one made, perhaps 3D printed? Thanks for all and any information so that I can get this wonderful old machine working as it should. Regards Cheryl in Perth Western Australia

Bringing a neglected machine back to life (Juki LU-563)
nylonRigging replied to MikeG's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
I picked-up a few machines in past years that were good shape, but stored longtime and bone dry. I did nothing more than wipe-down, remove all covers, and set the head on metal flat pan. I just 'heavily oil' every moving part. Then just let it sit for days with rolling it by hand every once while every day. After that I just check it out, like bobbin assembly, hook, timing, thread routing, feet and feed,..etc .. Then string it-up and see how it stitching. After that you can start working out all the little bugs, and getting the table/drive situation worked-out . But I have found for most part, if nothing is obviously BAD broken. Old industrial machines don't take to much of your time to get back to running condition . . -

That's identical to my Seiko stw 28b , which is a twin needle machine, but I only use it as a single needle machine. Mine was under a tarp on a verandah for quite a while and a bit exposed to the elements, I just oiled everything up and turned it gently by hand before I started it up, i had to fiddle around for a while, it needed a few adjustments, but works fine now. I can't find a manual for mine either. So I use a manual for a consew machine only as a guide. Good luck 👍 HS - Yesterday

Dwight Thanks so much for your detailed suggestions - I really appreciate it! The idea of using wooden dowels as stand-ins for the pens makes perfect sense. Since I don’t have a woodworking space, I’m wondering: where would you recommend having wooden form made? I also watched a pen case tutorial Kgg shared, and I believe that doesn’t require a wooden form. If you were in my position, would you rather choose that route considering the difficulty of sourcing a form? Just to clarify, this is part of what the client asked me to make. He’s not asking for a standalone pen case, but a complex A4 shell cordovan portfolio with : a full-zip opening, one side is to hold 12 fountain pen SECURELY, pockets for cards/misc items on one side, and an A4 notebook slot on the other. Since I’ve never made this type of pen case before — and because it’s in shell — I want to prototype a standalone pen case first before incorporating it into the folio. I’m also thinking of making pen cases with my own design as part of my product lineup , so the prototype will be worth the effort beyond just this commission. Alzilla Thanks! The client told me the brand and model of the pens he uses, but I’ll be sure to ask for the exact measurements to make sure everything fits perfectly. TOXO Thanks for sharing your thoughts - I really appreciate it! I answered your question above, and the brown insert does come off, which could allow for a main base with removable inserts for organizing the pens. I will double check the pen size with the client, and I size the slots with a little extra leeway. billybopp Hello! Kgg Thanks for sharing! I’ve actually watched that video before, and it looks like that method might not require wooden forms? So if I run into trouble making a wooden form, I could try that approach instead. And, just out of curiosity, how much would you guys think is a fair minimum for a project like this if you've been crafting quite some time and have made small accessories to brief cases and using shell quite a bit? Wondering how a build at this scale might be valued by fellow craters. I barely interact with other makers, so this feedback is really refreshing - thanks again!

It cleaned up very well and runs smoothly. After a thorough clean, I blew air in it to dry it out and was rewarded with what looked like a full bag of sunflower seed hulls. Guess somebody was living inside it! I'm very happy with how it is turning out. Thanks all for the encouragement. -
I have these folded bulls I bought years ago from Tandy I just came across them and there are no pattern with them must of got lost at some point does anyone know where I can get the pattern for these bulls?
