I've long wanted a cobbler's hammer (mainly 'cos I don't have one!). I remember my dad had one but it disappeared a very long time ago and wasn't among his tools when I got them. Very difficult to find, particularly used, so I thought "why don't I make one?". Can't be that hard. Hah, should have known better! I found a ball-peen hammer head for $3 and away I went. First thing was to reduce what I think was a very large tent peg to fit the hole in the head to prevent it from collapsing during the forging. I don't know what steel it was made from but it was tough to move under the hammer! Then it was time to start widening the head and likewise I don't know what the st…

What tools helped enhance your leatherwork? Different types of knives, stamps, etc.? I am a intermediate leather worker, I believe that I still have lots of improvement to do and I am wondering what tools I can use to help me achieve this.

I got myself an account at Temu because I needed some tips for stilettos heels, and it was the only place I could find some with an assortment. There is a lot of leather tools and stuff being offered at Temu, and I was curious to some of them. I have often considered making a Japanese type skiving knife, and suddenly one jumped up as a suggestion. The price was very reasonable, and I decided to give it a chance. After the waiting time of about two weeks time (after all the stuff comes from China) I got the package with the skiving knife. The first thing I have learnt about Temu is that it is incredibly important that you look at the measurements given on the pa…

I made this primarily to use with my lathe but it may be useful for working on sewing machines etc. Copper face one end, nylon the other, copper was melted from motor windings. I found that copper is a pain to turn in the lathe as it galls and creates a rough finish!

Are 'Head knife' and 'Round knife' two alternative names for the same thing, or is there a difference between them?

Looking to further tighten up details on leather holsters I build. I'm getting by currently with a round punch and a slightly too narrow oblong punch but would like to do this in one or two hammer blows. I normally build holsters matched with either a 1/4" or 5 1/16" belt. Could someone direct me to a good quality punch that will make the slots the size I need in one pass? I've looked at Osborns but haven't been able to determine the width of the slot they cut. I expect to pay a premium price so long as the punch is great quality. Thanks.

I made another die bending jig. I had the idea to make one with a simpler linkage so just had to do it. Unfortunately while the linkage looks simpler it took a bit of messing around to get it to work, and the angle of the handle is too high which meant I had to put a hefty downward bend in it to get it to a comfortable height. I might re-make the handle linkage as my original idea seems to work better. The other difference is the push slide, the original square tube sliding in a square tube has a bit of slop in it, the rod version is quite a snug fit, but it meant attaching the fittings to it was more complicated. I now know how to make an even better one - but I won't as…

I assume the UK is too dear also? I did a post a while back about this where I posted a link to Partwell. Usually sold in packs of 60/100 so heavy. Better off looking for die makers who might sell you some.

Cutting board 1 2 3

I'm a beginner and currently using a wooden cutting board made of oak for cutting leather with a head knife. I have a feeling that that cutting on wood makes the knife dull. So, can you please recommend some natural materials for cutting boards. I dislike using polymer/plastic products. What is the traditional surface for cutting leather with a head knife? Thanks.
