Leather History
Do you have pictures of an old shop? Antique tools? Stories of long ago masters? Information gleaned from dusty forgotten books? We are the keepers of a ten thousand year old tradition, and we enjoy learning about what was as much as what is.

A friend brought me tool that was found in a bunch of old harness parts. Brass head and handle like a hammer but has slots instead (about 1 1/4" wide and 1/4" or so tall) in either end of the head made like a strap would pass clear through. Ridges on bottom side of slot I figured for gripping and the hammer head is curved I thought for leverage. Anyone have any ideas what this tool might be?

So i have been doing alot of research and reading about leather work and I wanted to find some books but online they are quite expensive. About a week ago a very kind guy locally listed he had leather books and patterns. He so graciously held them while I got my money in order and I picked them up last night. When I say this Rubbermaid bin is a treasure trove I am not kidding. I don't know where he got this stuff but he asked if I only wanted some as alot of it is not that useful. I told him I wanted everything and I'd look through it and decide later what I didn't want to keep. He sold the entire bin to me and I assumed what h…

Here are photos of every page of a 1940-1950's era US Navy Leathercraft Manual. It includes patterns, locations to purchase supplies, and much more. I tried to take the best photos I could, if you want a close up of something let me know and I will try to accommodate.

For many of us, this was the first leather instruction book we saw. Note the title. When you open it, it’s about “leatherwork”. What do you call it, and why?

I received a buttload of tools and hardware from a gentleman who taught leatherwork at a local high school in the 70s+ he spent over 35yrs teaching. These wooden tools were in the same drawer as some strap cutters. First thought is clamps but they don’t work intuitively like that so figured someone here might be able to shed some light.

I am selling the vintage strap cutter I used many years ago but do not know the manufacturer. Can anyone identify it? Thanks for your help.

I looked up the old Los Angeles business white pages from the 50's and 60's. This was the address of the old Craftool location. It's an industrial building, so I guess this was where they made the stamps? Then they moved to Texas. If you're interested in a property, it was for sale last I checked. I would be interested to hear from anyone who worked there or knows more about the history of stamp making in California.

Sheridan Style, California Style ... where are the best places to see/understand a carving "style"? 1 2

Carving seemed (well, still seems) magic to me. I've seen a lot of really cool work of all sorts of styles, but I'm wondering if there are sources for examples of styles somewhere on the web? Best stuff I seem to be able to find is on image search, but the search engines really don't know the difference between any of the styles.

So, I have lurked around this forum for a bit, and when I dug these out yesterday, decided it would be a good place for help. I don't often hit a brick wall, but I can find nothing about these... Not even sure what they are... My assumption being a strap cutter of sorts. So the threaded holes indicated in red held a straight blade, which was removed to sharped. It is profiled like the end of a butchers knife. The screw holes indicated in yellow, i dont know what was there, but assumed a curved blade, judging by the anvil. The oblong hole perplexes me, maybe the blade had a punch attached? Maybe it was none functional? The green circle is where a leaf sprin…
