I thought I'd post this topic so that I feel that I am contributing to the forum with more than just pics of my work. How I make a Bridle - most of this is a plain bridle but to show the stitching I have added some fancy pattern work For those of you who may be interested - here's how to make a bridle Making a Bridle Firstly, here are all the tools needed. These are JUST for bridle making, there are other tools for making harness and other saddlery. The price of these tools totals around £1000! From the top, in their 'rows' left to right, they are: Splitting machine, lighter, gas blow-torch, lead block, stain, staining stick and polishing cloth Sci…

I usually make bridles with a simple cavesson noseband - a continuous strap of leather and the buckle off center under the chin. This bridle has a Swedish or crank style noseband that evokes strong opinions. The crank is two-piece construction with a padded strap that can generate some leverage when tightening the noseband. Proponents say that the crank style provides flexibility and even pressure under the jaw. Critics note that the crank lends itself to overtightening, causing discomfort. The name "crank" is a rather unfortunate choice. I posted the bridle on social media and sure enough some of the comments were "cranky." Maybe there's no such thing as bad p…

A friend of mine had an old saddle and halter/bridle she wanted cleaned. The saddle hadn't been cleaned and had quite a bit of mud, grime, and dust. I cleaned it up and replaced a couple pieces. The halter/bridle didn't have mud on it but it was grimy, swollen, and is starting to disintegrate. It felt like it had been drowned in wax and weighs a lot. I has a curb chain but it had a rusty quick link holding it on. She wanted it cleaned but I advised her that it was on it's way out and it should be completely replaced. The new halter/bridle is made with 10oz vegtan. The crown, brow band, nose band, and cheek pieces are double layered.

I have made various things from leather and I feel like tackling a larger project. Whether that's me making tack to sell or making tack for me, I'm interested in how the complexity of certain things work. I'm vaguely aware of how to create a treed saddle, but what I'm really interested in is treeless (seems like a "horse girl" thing so maybe lucrative lol) and so now I'm trying to figure out how to make treeless saddles that aren't shit, with proper wither clearance. Also, instead of asking The Google I was wondering what your favorite measurements for things like headstalls and breastcollars are. Thanks!

This time at home I was asked if I could replace the leather on a leather covered bit. I gently removed the old covering and used it to make a template for the new covering. I used some veg tan since I read that it was the preferred material for the horse to chew on. THe idea is semingly that the leather is easier on the teeth and the mouth of the horse, and that sounds right to me. I opted for a baseball stitch instead of the original criss cross type stitch, In my head I am able to make a tighter sewing that way. I read on a page regarding leather bits that it was encouraged to give the leather a coat of olive oil, again as far as I could make of it all becaus…

Hi, I hope you can help me. A friend of mine asked me if I could make a breast collar for her horse. Now I'm looking for the right hardware, but I can't seem to find it. Can you tell me where I can get hardware similar to the one in the picture? Thanks!

When I first started leatherwork I made a couple headstall that were less than great. I needed a new one for a new horse I got, so I decided to try again. I used 8-9 oz for the outside and lined it with 2-3 oz. It’s hand sewn with Maine thread and I used a 3/4” cart dome buckle. Then gave it a good coat of neatsfoot oil. Let me know what you think and what I can do better on the next one. Thank you for any input.

I had repaired a set of sliding reins for the stables where Gustav works, and I got inspired to make a set of sliding reins myself. The reins measured 2.5 m each (about 8' 4"), and they are basically just a strap of 5/16" leather with a carabin hook in one end and a buckle in the other end. So a very doable project. The hechte that I had was only 7' 4" long, so I needed to stretch it a bit to be able to get the desired length including bends around the carabin hook and the buckle. I soaked the straps in water for about an hour or so and left them in a plastic bag for casing during the rest of the day. In the evening I made a setup that allowed me to stretch the …
