Over the past couple months, there has been a lot of spam posted. Some is a new user just registered to post spam. There are other cases where they have broken into accounts by hacking the password to the account. Several of these cases have been older accounts where the user has only posted once, and may not be following leatherworker.net any more. If you are using simple passwords or common passwords like "123", "password", "qwerty", etc. PLEASE UPGRADE YOUR PASSWORD. There are lists of common passwords available on the net. These hackers run those lists against a username login and in many cases have a match within 2 to 5 seconds. Some of these sp…

Please note that some of the instructions in the early part of this thread are for a previous version of the Forum's software. But this is still useful and helpful information. More current info is in the latter posts. Being one of the computer impaired, I thought I would let the rest of our clan know how I post pictures. There may be a shorter way, but this works for me. You do it all on Leatherworker - no need for posting on another site. To start with, you need to be in the "Reply" section, not just the "Fast Reply". Then, as you are typing in the white box, look down and to your left. There is an empty long white box. Then there is a button that says …

HEIC files are a proprietary picture format owned and used on Apple products. They do not display on many computers and smart devices so if you post them here, you are limiting your audience and therefore the likelihood of getting good responses to your post. Current versions of Windows 10 + have an add on that allows the photos to be viewed in Windows "Photo" app. However it will not let you save or convert HEIC files to your device. You can set your device to save files in JPG format so you can upload without going through a bunch of hassles to find and install a converter. There is a free converter at https://heic.imobie.com/heic-to-jpg/ that will do …

EDIT: Links to XP and Powertoys no longer work, so disregard any links to these items. Other posts below still have useful information. For those of you with XP, the Powertoys Image Resizer tool was a "have to have" power tool. But now that Vista is out here, and 64bit OS, that tool no longer worked. This group has cloned the tool so now it works in our versions too. It's the simplest way to resize your pix for posting here. A right click to the menu, and choose resize...simple. http://phototoysclone.codeplex.com/Release...93#ReleaseFiles

I've been asked how to back up files a couple of times, and thought it might be helpful to put this in here for reference. Backing up your XP computer The goal of a successful backup strategy is to minimize data loss and your recovery time. If you suddenly had a bolt of lightning come through your window and smoke your computer, what would you lose? If the thought of a catastrophic failure makes you shake or sweat, your back up plan is not sufficient for your needs. How much effort you want to put into your backup routine is proportional to how valuable your data is to you. You may need a combination of the following suggestions. Partitioning Is Your First Line Of D…

Is following a subforum expected to be reliable? A month or so ago I set myself as following the Leather Sewing Machines subforum. Since then I've only been reading things I see notifications for, which I assumed would be all the new posts in that subforum, plus replies to things I've replied to. Today I stumbled upon some new posts in the same subforum that I had not seen and that did not show up in my notifications. Example post that I did not receive a notification for: https://leatherworker.net/forum/topic/131587-binding-attachment-from-china/ That was posted on Thursday. Here is a screenshot of my notifications for thursday @Johanna f…

For the tech people out there. Due to an unfortunate incident involving the collision of my laptop keyboard with neatsfoot oil, I have to replace my 2020 M1 MacBook Air. Trying to figure out if it makes sense for longevity to get an M3 Air over an M2. I don’t need to be able to lift heavy processing loads, as I don’t do video or photo editing or similarly processor-hungry tasks. Thoughts?
