I met Jerry at the Elko, Nv show last year. Super nice guy. My wife & I must have talked to him for 45 minutes. What a character. I'll definitely be doing business with him again.

From one welder to another, that's AWESOME! Great job on the coasters too. The horse shoe holder was a great idea as well!

Holster for Leatherworking Tools

Very interesting project. Nice work! -
Richard, I am by no means an expert, but one suggestion that I have is to fade out your backgrounding. That is, hitting your background tool harder when it is up near your carving, then lighter & lighter as you move further away from it. I sometimes also use a modeling spoon to help fade. By the way, I do like the coloring & I really like the design on the second purse. Cheers

Yeah, better pics would be great, but I really like the lettering! Very cool.

Wow, looks great to me! Very nice work on the flower. -
I just made this from a scrap & thought I'd share the idea. It takes up way less room than keeping it in it's box & maybe took an hour to make. -Cheers

This one is a long match stick holder... ...credit card holder... ...and a belt for my brother in law. Happy Holidays all!

Vinegaroon Success!
Bryan replied to Bryan's topic in Dyes, Antiques, Stains, Glues, Waxes, Finishes and Conditioners.
Thanks very much for the info. Can't wait to do some serious work with this stuff. -
This stuff is freakin amazing! Pardon my excitement; I'm just blown away after seeing it work! So here's how it went: After spending hours upon hours reading up on the subject here, I got my vinegar & steel wool & started. I brewed mine for 4-5 weeks before the steel was completely dissolved & I was happy with the appearance. Here's what I learned: 2 factors that would have sped up the process are fineness of the steel wool & letting the stuff breath. For the first 2 weeks there was almost no change in appearance, even with agitating every 2 days. I brewed in a 5 gal. bucket & noticed a large amount of condensation every time I lifted the lid to agitate. So, instead of leaving the lid partially closed, I tried just resting it gently on top of the bucket, allowing it to breathe better. Once I did this, the process advanced dramatically. Well, this morning I finally filtered it & gave it a shot. Man, does this stuff work! Black as black can be! I do still have one concern & it's about the rinsing. I tooled my leather first, & the impressions seem to have held up well. Just wondering if it may be a better practice to tool after the process or if that would even work as the vinegaroon seems to have repelled the water.

Wow man! That hat looks like something from a Tim Burton film! Very very cool.

Looks good. I can't wait til I have the room to build an actual work bench. I've got to use the kitchen table; lucky my wife is pretty tolerant of it.

20 year old products?
Bryan replied to Bryan's topic in Dyes, Antiques, Stains, Glues, Waxes, Finishes and Conditioners.
Yeah, I've had to use pliers on a couple of these as well. I've played with a few of the products now & am really exited. Until now I've only used some of the water based products & have not been so happy with the results. So far this stuff seems to be great. I suppose thats why they've been used for so many years. Makes me even more disappointed I can't get a lot of stuff here in ca. any more. -
Tom, fantastic work! Honestly inspirational.

My wife & I drove up to Napa yesterday to purchase my first full side at the Hide House. I gotta say, it was cool! The folks there were very friendly & I have never seen so much leather in my life! We walked in, told them what I was looking for, & they pretty much turned us loose. I bought their premium grade veg. tanned 5-6oz. & I think I got a good price. The one I picked is apparently European? Not sure what that means exactly (aside from the obvious), I just liked the color best. Of course I couldn't wait to see how it tooled, so I cut off a corner to see. What a difference! This stuff is nice! I was worried at first because it is so soft, but once I got used to it, tooled nicely & I was able to get nice deep depressions. Any way, the visit was a great experience & so far I'm really happy with my purchase.

Seat looks great! I'd love to see it with the brass installed. I realy like the way it's darkened arount its perimeter. Got a nice antique feel. One question: did you wet mold the edge over the foam or use a form of some sort?

20 year old products?
Bryan replied to Bryan's topic in Dyes, Antiques, Stains, Glues, Waxes, Finishes and Conditioners.
Thanks frontpost. Guess I'll run with 'em. By the way, that avatar is great! -
I've got a hand full of products that are 20-30 years old. They look usable but I don't want to keep them around if not. I've got Fiebling's Tan-Kote, Tandy Leather Glow, Tandy Super Dye, Fiebing's Dye, saddle soap & carnauba cream. None of them are totaly separated or anything & I've used the Tan-Kote & dye on some scrap. They seem to be fine. Any reason why I should not use them??? Thanks, Bryan
