  1. Yes, very well done! I cant believe the difference between the two conditions.
  2. That is excellent, I've also got plans to do charitable donations... when I get my skill up that is. If someone won something I made in a raffle I'd probably get run out of town haha!
  3. That was great
  4. Hey everyone, I have a question regarding types of leather, thickness of leather and stiffness/floppyness of leather in relation to eachother. I understand the concept of weight in oz. representing the thickness but I sort of thought that the thicker the leather the stiffer it might be but apparently I'm wrong on this. I have two types of cowhide leather, both 4 to 4.5oz and one is floppy and the other is stiffer, not tooling leather stiff but it is a noticable difference. Is it the tanning process? Short of buying $100.00+ sides of leather to learn the differences in them, how do we go about knowing how much flex/stiffness a leather has? Side note: the two leather types I have is an upholstery leather (the stiffer one) and some stoned oil cowhide (floppier).
  5. That is one damn fine question, wondered that too but never thought to put it out there.
  6. Excellent, I'm going to order some!
  7. I've seen two types of saddle soap, a yellow and a white. Does either stain or discolour the leather have you noticed?
  8. Hey everyone, I posted this a few days back in the "chemicals, finishing, dying etc." section but I think that area might not get much traffic so I'm going to ask here. I have one of David Morgan's braiding books and in it he recommends Peckard's Leather Dressing not only as a conditioner but as a grease to lubricate the laces while braiding. I've also read several sites that advise to stay away from petroleum based products, which Peckard's happens to be. So. what are your thoughts? Any one used this with a degree of success? My kangaroo lace is collecting dust and is begging to get used!
  9. Thanks for the responses gang, I'll keep an eye out for your post Jim look forward to it
  10. I was curious if anyone could point me in the right direction. I'm looking for a pattern to make a "newsboy" style hat as in this picture, I want to try my hand at them, I love those hats. Does anyone have one they could pass on or possibly let me know where to look (books etc)? As a secondary, is there any resources specifically for making hats from leather in general? Books dedicated to the topic maybe? Thanks from a newbie
  11. Hey I happen to be looking for something similar if not the exact same thing. It's the ring and assembly that the bolt snap is attached to in this pic. If someone can name it or point me to a supplier that would be so excellent!
  12. Excellent! If my first sheath turns out half as good as this, I'll be happy
  13. Hi all, I was just wondering what the concensus is on using Peckard's Leather Dressing (a petrolium based product)? I'm fairly new to leatherworking and I'm not certain about this but I seem to recall reading that using petrolium based products on leather isn't advisable. I am looking for some kind of grease or lubricant for braiding but it'd be nice to know if this product, if good, is useable for more than just braided projects. Thanks in advance.
