Where does one start learning how to do this? Book recommendations?

I don't have a sewing machine and was wondering a couple of things. When it comes to softer leathers like upholstry, chap or garment I cant use a stitching groover or overstitch wheel, so I'm looking for advice on how to make good straight and uniform sewing. How do I space out holes evenly without an overstitch wheel and keep my seams consistant?I own a few Stohlman books but they deal with stiffer leathers that you would generally pregroove your stitch line and I havent seen much or anything in regards to handsewing the softer leathers.

I recently bought a side of 8-10oz strap grade latigo from Tandy and as I'm still so new at this I had a couple of questions. Item can be found at this link: http://www.tandyleatherfactory.ca/en-cad/search/searchresults/9056-05.aspx 1) It's vegtan latigo, I was wondering if vegtan latigo edges will burnish? 2) Can it be wetformed as tooling leather can be? 3) Would this be an adequate leather for a fixed blade knife sheath?

Hi there, I'm interested in trying to make a bota bag and was wondering if anyone's ever pulled this off here yet? Anyone know what might be used for the interior, what kind of leather(s) to use, or possibly a pattern? Hints tips and ideas welcome

Irish Linen Thread Canadian Suppliers Maybe?
DSJackson replied to DSJackson's topic in Sewing Leather
Thanks I'll check them out! -
Are there any suppliers of irish linen thread in Canada that anyone knows of? I'm looking for some decent colour selection in the 6/7 ply area. I went to the royalwood (http://www.royalwoodltd.com/) website and it looks like they have it all so I was about to order the sample card of size/colour ranges for $2.00 but the cheapest shipping to Canada is over $30.00 for that small card. Yikes!

I have a simple messenger bag (made from cloth fabric, not leather) I lwas thinking of dismantling to create a pattern from. How feasable is this, and any hints tips or things to take into consideration? Another question; Cloth/fabric patterns for sewing, do these need to be altered if I wanted to try and use leather? Thanks!

I'd actually like to take a crack at making a set of these myself if anyone still has a pattern they're willing to share?

I use a lot of memo pads and decided to make a cover that I can slip new pads into to save wear and tear from the pockets. First a bit of info on the pads in question: 5" long X 3" wide, spiralbound at the top. Link for image purpose only: http://www.officedep...nd-Top-Opening/ I've never undertaken this kind of project before so I just opened the pad, measured it from top to bottom and side to side on a piece of paper and made the pattern, and added size for stitching placement. I cut the leather out from the pattern and just to see roughly how it was going to work out I lay the open pad on the cut leather and close the whole thing as it would be if it were finished. Not terribly suprised by the fact that it's too short. I thought that the spiral's dimensions would make up for that when I measured but when closed the leather is a good inch or slightly more too short. What did I do wrong here? For future projects of this kind, how does one account for this when making patterns? I've never made a wallet before but I immediately imagined this would be an issue with making wallets too. In dire need of tips, hints and tricks! Thanks in advance

Brown Gater Holster
DSJackson replied to kid terico's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Like the other comments, I don't spend much time thinking about holsters but that is seriously one bad-ass holster! I can't believe how awesome that looks! -
That's excellent! We'd definately like to see more

Hi Brian, will this method lend itself to leather thong? By this I mean when tying it, will the flesh side of the thong remain on the inside of the knot or would it twist around? Thanks, Dave
-
Ah perfect. I can tie turk's heads I'll go back and look at page 365 and work off that first to get used to it and be sure to leave enough slack to work with, thanks for the help gang

Hi gang, I'm having an issue tying a knot found in Bruce Grant's Encyclopedia, "turk's head for covering leather holding a ring". There's 6 diagrams, three have instruction, the other three don't and I've tried to follow the patterns as per the diagrams but when I tie it, it looks good on the front and a complete mess on the back. I understand it's basically just tying a turk's head around the intersection of a "T" and I have other instructions for this but it doesnt allow for a flat leather thong, it gets flipped around, doesn't work whereas the Bruce Grant one is specifically made for a flat length of thong. Help! Bruce Grant's Encyclopedia of Rawhide and Leather Braiding Pg. 321 Plate 131.

Hello, I saw this on ebay and was wondering if anyone could tell me what this cord is? It's not anything like leather cord I've used before, it's more rugged looking. The stuff I'm used to seeing is a sort of "laminated" cheap cord most often seen on this type of necklaces. Does anyone know where I might find something like this or what the name of this is? http://cgi.ebay.com/Sol-Leather-Cord-Mens-Surfer-Necklace-w-Ring-Pendant-/370375376449?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item563c17be41 Check out the auction, the pictures enlarge for a clearer view at what I'm talking about here. Thanks
