  1. I am making a outback style hat and watched a video about how to do it. In the video he said he made a beeswax sealer for his. He said he used a couple noncented beeswax candles and mixed it with some mineral spirits to make a paste. The finish was a dull finish which I want. My question is. what size candle or how much beeswax in oz's to how much mineral spirts to make a good sealer??? Any help would be greatly apreciated. Thank you. John
  2. So how much do you think I need take off the edge all the way around? 1/8? John
  3. Steadybrook. I have a couple questions if you don't mind. I cut the brim out for the Tandy Maverick hat. The large size should fit from 7 1/4 to 7 1/2. Measuring around the inside opening it is 24 7/8 around. My head is 23. With the side panels in place will this still fit? It says to use 5-6 oz leather. I was thinking of using 3-4 oz plus 2-3 oz for sweatband. Doubled on the brim still of course. Do you think that would be ok for the hat and fit? Please let me know what you think. John P.S I cut the side panel from the pattern and taped it together and it does get bigger around the top area. Just like I thought it looked like. So I am going to use the side panel idea from the video. Which would end up being 2 peices but will look better I think.
  4. I guess not to many people make hats here. . John
  5. Steadybrook. Do you happen to have a picture of a finished Maverick hat? I am wondering what one looks like done. The Tandy pattern has a picture but it is not to clear. From the picture it looks like the side panel flares out a little at the top. My idea above isn't going to work I think. So am thinking of using the side panel from the pattern except doing it like the video and turning it inside out so the seams are on the inside. One problem I am having is figuring out how to change the top so it has more of a point in front like the video one. I also changed the brim from 4 1/4 to a 3 inch brim. Any help would be greatly appreciated. John
  6. Well according to the sizes I am a large. So I used just the inside measurment for the large size cut it out of some posterboard and it fit with a little extra but will be adding a sweat band which will take up some of that. I will more then likely have to wet form for final fit. I think it said from 7 1/4 to 7 1/2. Now the Mavrick hat has a 4inch brim so not using that. I am going to make the brim 3 inches. Then use the crown and top from the video. Yes the crown will be 2 peices but don't have the extra length for one peice. From what it said the peice's have to be 11 inches on one side and 13 on the other. Making each peice slope 1 inch on each end the way a triangle does if you can picture that. And they will be 4 3/4 high. From what it said it will dip in the front and back I guess. I will make it up out of posterboard first and go from there. Not sure what to use yet for the sweat band. John
  7. Thank you for the reply Madadh. For the brim I was going to use the brim from the Tandy Maverick style hat. The pattern was free over on the patterns and templates section. It has premarked sizes in it. An then I will go from there. John
  8. Well I am not good at making my own patterns and the one video is in cm. So I think what I am going to do is use the Tandy mavrick pattern;s brim and use the altered crown and top from the bush hat. That one is my size anyway. So the two should go together. I guess no one here has ever made the Mavrick hat before. I figured someone would show a picture of one they made. Oh well. Thanks anyway. John
  9. Never mind I looked at the measurement again and seen it was 8 1/2 when I thought it said 6 1/2. For the inside demention front to back. John
  10. I was watching the video Nothmount put up again and noticed something about the pattern. The brim size would be 4 inches in the front and back but the sides would only be 2 3/4 on each side? Is that normal for a hat to have a smaller brim on the sides then the front and back? John
  11. Northmount. Thank you for the reply and information. I did watch that video. I am not to good at making patterns. If I were to say use the proper size from say the Tandy Maverick pattern. Could I use the crown and top setup from the video to alter the Maverick pattern? Well I think the brim size might be differant to but I think I can use a compass to alter that. Does that sound possable? John
  12. groovytech. Thank you for the reoky and info. At the moment I can't afford the 35.00 pattern and vid but maybe before long. I was really wondering if someone had made the Tandy Mavrick style hat and if it could be altered to not look like a cowboy hat so much. Anyone???? John
  13. Or could be called an outback hat. John
  14. I am wondering how to make a slouch/bush hat. Has anyone made one? Is there a pattern for it out there? I have the Tandy hat pattern pack and was wondering if the mavrick style hat could be altered to make one? Can anyone help me out with this? Thank you. John
  15. Or is a bush hat alot differant? Has anyone made one of those? If so is it alot differant then this pattern? Please let me know. I want to make one and this is the only pattern I have at the moment. John
  16. Link didn't work?? Can anyone else see it and share? John
  17. I was wondering if anyone has made one of the Tandy Mavrick style Hats. I was thinking of making one and wanted to see a finished one. The Tandy picture is old and not that clear. I have the pattern just want to see one that someone has done. I am wondering if this can be altered to look more like a bush hat. But would really just like to see a finished one. If someone could share a picture of the one they made it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. John
  18. Would like to get a copy myself if still available. Would think bags and pouches would be cool but all sounds great.. Thank you. john
  19. Thank you for the reply. Yes that will work for tracing which was what I wanted to know. But I was also wondering about fine tipped stylus's for drawing directly on the leather to. Where can I find those? I have looked around and have had no luck. John
  20. Really I started this to find out what to use to write fine details. I didn't know they made fine tipped stylus's. Where can I find one? I like to draw alot and would like to find some fine tipped stylus's for that. Pencils break when trying to get the fine lines in the leather so those would be great. Let me know if you know of a place to buy them. John
  21. Cool I will try that. thanks everyone!! John
  22. Have a quicl question. I am trying to write something into the inside sleeve of a book cover but the letters need to be 'fine'. I am writting something I printed out so need a fine tip that won't tear threw the paper and a stylus produces to thick of a line. Tried a pencil amd tore threw the paper and some scrap I was trying it on. Any suggestions? John
  23. Thank you for the reply. I was not able to find any spheres online Is that the only way to make one?? I would have thought there was some type of way to figure that out instead of just tearing up a hat. John
