  1. Hi everyone! I was wanting to make a winter hat. The type with the fold up ear flaps. So I needed to know how big to make it. First cut strips of poster board 1 inch wide. Then wrapped one around my head like a headband and taped it together( it was 23 1/2 inches) then taped a strip to the bottom of the headband by my ear over the top of my head and to the bottom of the headband on the other side of my head. That was 12 1/4. And then a strip from front to back the same way and it was 13 1/8 from front to back. This made a perfect fit to my head in size. But I was left with 4 triangle shaped areas that needed filled in. I have having a hard time making a pattern of this area as it needs to be bent to fit and the paper just wants to fold over and buckle. So I can't seem to figure out how to make this much less a pattern for them. Maybe someone has made one before and can help me out? I have seen other ways of making triangles of sorts and sewing them all together but don't know how to figure that shape out. Those are my head measurments. maybe someone knows how to make the shape I need for 4 equal panels. Any and all help greatly appreciated. Thank you. john
  2. DoubleBarP thank you for the help. Pip thank you for the suggestion. But I downloaded the wildthings before and got more then I barganed for. Filled my computer with viruses. Programs starting up on there own it was a mess to clean up. I may have been unlucky and things may have changed by now. But don't want to risk it. but thank you very much for the suggestion. john
  3. 64 views and no one can tell me if someone makes a pattern for a leather backpack? Yes I have seen them for fabric. I just wondered if someone "made one for leather" Anyone? Has anyone made one before? If so did you buy a pattern or just come up with one yourself? John

  6. Thank you for the replies. It is the right setter. And it does set fine. I tried a piece of thick plastic tape on the eyelet and it did not scrap the paint off. Only tried it on one so far. I will try it on a few more and report back to say weather it worked or not. John
  7. Has anyone had this problem????? Or am I the only one? John
  8. I have seen one of these before. It was my understanding that it was used for paper. Not sure if it works on leather but it might. I am sure someone here can tell you. Wish i could help more. john
  9. I am trying to use some black eyelets on a project. I have been testing some on scrap leather first because it's the first time I have used them. My problem is after I set one the black paint is scraped off and the brass shows. How can I prevent this from happening? John
  10. That is a good idea. Never thought of that. Thank you. John
  11. Thanks for the reply Luke. I couldn't find them at Tandy's. And was not sure how to order at Ohio travel bag. I did see some on ebay. But they were $1 each. John
  12. I wanted to know if anyone sold the speed laser eyelets like used on military boots? Anyone know where to find them? Please let me know. thank you. john
  13. Thank you for the replies. Solid brass or stainless would be the way to go then. Thank you for the help and your time. John
  14. Wondering if anyone knows where I can find a good belt buckle that won't give me a rash on my belly. The ones I used in the military never bothered me but the ones from Tandy give me a rash. Anyone ever have this problem? If so what kind of buckle did you use? Oh if it helps I normally can only wear gold neckleses everything else gives me a rash. I know I am not the only one with that problem. Any help would be greatly!!! appreciated. Thank you. John
  15. Robert thank you for the help. Sure I was just wondering where to find the neoprene pad. That is very generous of you to offer the pad. I would greatly appreciate that. John
  16. Eaglestroker thank you for the reply. Those slings look really nice. When applying the pad and suede or other material on to the sling What is your aproach to triming it to fit the rifle sling? Just wondering cause I've never did it before. John
  17. About to make a padded rifle sling and hada couple of questions. First What would be the BEST thickness leather to use? Also when making the pad part of the sling. How long do you make the pad? I have never made one before but got a pattern and going to try it. Any and all help would be greatly apreciated. Thank you. john
  18. I have tried the leather guy and he has no 6oz deer tanned leather. I looked on ebay and it was slim pickings. The stuff I found was "thinner on top or thinner on bottom" When I emailed to ask how much was uneven I got no replies. So I have not been able to find anything to make these from. I do want to go with the thickest I can so they last. I was wondering and I know it would not be normal to do use for mocs. But could you use veg tan leather? I know it's not suede but could it be used to make them? I have lots of that on hand. Let me know what you think. Or if you know somewhere to find thick suede at a good price. Thank you. john
  19. Thanks again Silvia that's what I needed to know/ John
  20. Thank you for the reply Silvia. I just bought the pattern no leather included with it just a pattern for the pieces that need to be cut out. So go with 6-8oz elk or buffalo for the upper and what to use for the sole? Hand stitching no lace. John
  21. I recently bought the Tandy Inca boot pattern. It looks easy enough but there is a lot of information not included. I have never made these or mocs before so this is new to me. Ok it does not say what type or thickness of leather to use. What to use as a sole etc. Has anyone made these before? If so I really need some help with the information part. And anything else you think might help. Thank you in advance for any and all of your help. john
  22. I think the patent idea is a good idea. Why does it have to be the same size? Well for most people it wouldn't matter. But for me I like the double purpose bag that it was intended to be. Originaly it had two straps that had clip hooks at the end and would go over the soldiers shoulder and hook on to D rings on there suspenders as a back pack. Or add the extender strap which just had a D ring at both ends to the straps with the hooks and it was a shoulder bag. I was actually thinking of making the hole rig (M36 suspenders, pistol belt, and mussette bag) and maybe the 45 holster and mag pouch. But I think the canteen cover would be tricky. Just an idea I had thought it might be a cool project. John
  23. I am surprised no one has tried it. But it looks like the only way is to buy a worn out one and rip it apart and make the pattern. Little pricey that way. Jon
  24. Although if you wanted it to look the same. How or what hardware would you use for the straps on the flap. I don't think the original hardware for the straps on the flap would work with leather. Any thoughts???? John
