Hi everyone. Had an idea today to make a despenser for my thread. To keep it free of dust or anything. Then I thought ifI made it big enough to hold 3 4oz rolls of thread. But they would have to stamd on a wooden rod so it can spin. Then I would need a hole half way up where the spool would be. Start the thread threw the hole and pull out what's needed and cut it off. I think it would work. Also if big enough for 3 spools I could have all 3 colors I use ready to go. Just pull and snip. So I was thinking one to mount to the wall would be good. But make it out of leather. So what do you think? Would it be a cool project? Any suggestions? John

I am trying to find a source or a place to buy a U.S embossed brass buckle for a M1916 1911 pistol belt I am trying to make. I am already making the holster and mag pouch and thought it would be cool to make the belt to. So does anyone know where to find the buckle for it? I have searched the web and can't find one so thought I would ask here. I am adding a picture of what it looks like. Thank you. John

1911 M1912 Cavalry Holster Question
johnggrg replied to johnggrg's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Thank you Scott for the information. Would still like to know from some one who has made one where to get the right hardware. Not sure what the other piece is. One is a buckle and the other? Please let me know. Thank you. John -
Planning on making th M1912 cavalry holster in the near future and had a question. I looked at some on ebay there is a leg strap that goes on it with a buckle and some other type of buckle not sure. I know it is a 3/4 strap. So my question is. Is there a correct type of hardware I should use and if so can anyone point me in the right direction to some? John P.S Is the block on the inside needed?

Funny how nobody seems to read anything. They just post and leave. The link has been posted over and over. But they seem to go to the last post and ask for them. Read people. Thank you for sharing these by the way. John

Thanks for the information. Looked at Tandy and was going to buy the 10mm stud till it said it would cost 12.99 for shipping. Can you beleive that. Anyone know a cheaper place. Looked on ebay the only ones that said they were10mm were from china. And not buying from china if I can help it. And not wanting to pay 12.99 shipping either. So any suggestions? John

I recently bought the 100th anniversary pattern pack and was going to make the cavalry holster and have a question. It uses a brass button stud for the closure. What size would be right? I have seen them for sale on ebay but there is small, medium, and large. Instructions don't say what size to use. Also there are two types out there. The stud that needs to be pounded together and one that's has a screw on the back. I would rather use the screw type but not sure on the size to use. If anyone knows what size I should use please let me know. I would greatly appreciate it. Also if anyone has made one of these please feel free to post a picture. Thank you. John

mrdabeetle thank you for taking the time to share these patterns it is very generous of you. I can't beleive there will be more. I am wondering how the chest armor all fits together. It seems simple but looking at it. I am not sure. Thank you again very much for these. john -
I am not sure where to ask this question so I hope this is ok. I was working on a project and set it down on a wet sponge. Didn't come back for a few hours and when I noticed it left a big wet spot I sat it out to dry and it left a big stain. Is this removable? It is dry but it left a big stain. Not sure why. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you. John

Has Anyone Done A Tandy Mavrick Style Hat?
johnggrg replied to johnggrg's topic in Patterns and Templates
Just an update. When I cut my 2 brims out and tried to line them up they would not line up right. I was wondering how this happened. Then I thought about it and realized the problem. When I trced the pattern on to the leather I did it on the smooth side for both. So when I tried to line them up rough side to rough side they wouldn't line up. So I tried lining them up smooth to rough and they lined up perfect. So that means I should have marked one of them on the rough side and they would have lined up perfect. My mistake. But thought I would share so no one else wastes there leather like I did. Unless your going to make 2 hats then it's not a waste I guess. So mark and cut one brim peice from the smooth side and mark and cut one from the rough side and they will line up perfect. John -
Has Anyone Done A Tandy Mavrick Style Hat?
johnggrg replied to johnggrg's topic in Patterns and Templates
Redtailhalk thank you for sharing the photo. I am only going to use the brim inside demention to start with for mine. I shortened the brim to 3 inches and widened the inside by 1/16. The top and sides are going to be differant. And I am going to make them to where the seam on the top will be on the inside. So I don't have the raised lip you see all the way around the top. Just going to sew it rough side out then turn it inside out and attach to the brim. It will look more like the one in the video when I am done. I'm trying to not have the cowboy look to it. Did you make that hat using 2 peices of 5-6 oz leather for the brim? Seems like it would be to thick if I did it using 2 peices as the instructions say. But it is my first so don't know. John P.S Your hat looks great by the way. -
Dwight. Exactly what I wanted to know. Thank you!! I had heard mineral spirts was used. Is there differant ways to make the finish? I didn't want a shiny finish at all for mine. John
