  1. Hey Bert, I know you mentioned it, but I almost missed it anyway. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! Wish there was a CD of Dr. Hook singing happy birthday, but if there is, I dont know where to get it, so just imagine them singing it to you. Hope you have a great day!!! Ernie PS: Happy Birthday to Mia (hope that's right) Maria and Riley too! Wasn't there a couple more b'days in the house this month too? Must be almost like Christmas in October.

    Turnbacks

Here's a couple pictures of turnbacks out of a really old catalog.
  3. Wasn't just Kathy's camera Bert. I think it's your picture from the class that is the portal. Check this out from my camera. I tried half a dozen times to load the rest of the pictures of the class on here this morning and it just refuses to let me. I give up. Maybe I'll try again this weekend. It was a fun class and a great weekend. Thanks for inviting Kathy to teach in your store, and for your family's hospitality. Hope we get to do it again sometime.

    Turnbacks

Tina, The ones I have are (smallest to largest) 945, 946, 947, 942, 943, 944. There is also another set of turnbacks that look similar to smooth camoflage tools. The numbers on them are 432, 445, 446, 447 and 448. As you can see, over the years, as they retired some tools and introduced some new ones, they used the numbers over so there are sometimes more than one shape of tool with the same number. I have an extra 942 and if you want it, it's yours.
  5. Clay Miller has a busy schedule of upcoming classes at the Tandy Leather Factory store in Rapid City, SD. IF you happen to be in the area, try and attend a class or two. Or, if you are looking for a place to take a trip, the Black Hills are a great place for a vacation, and you could take a class too! I posted these on the calendar, but for some reason they dont show up on the list of upcoming events. They do show up if you open up the November and December calendars. Hope some of you can make it. I'm sure they'll be great classes and you'll have some fun with these projects. Have someone hard to shop for your list this year? Can't find that perfect gift? 7. If she was going for teacher's pet, she blew it when she gave that cool album with the dog on it to you Brent. I'm still jelous. Skip the apples, I like cool leather projects.
  8. Yes I know what she does to bad yaks, she brought some of it along for us to sample, and it was good! There were a bunch of pictures taken from Kathy's class. My computer crapped out while I was gone, and it's tough enough trying to type on this laptop, I have no idea how to get my pictures on here, but I'll try and do it as soon as possible. It was a great class, there were only 4 students but we had a lot of fun and I think there will be more like it in Rapid in the future.
  9. Congrats Caroline and Casey!!!! I'm really proud of both of you too!!
  10. Crystal, You get an A for originality! That's a really neat idea. Don't worry too much about failing the semester, we'll let you take it over. I took a class this weekend and the teacher, Yaklady (my mom) was throwing things at me. I get no respect! Thanks for playing. Clay

    New Masks

You did a great job on all of these masks Helen! Lots of variety and different techniques and they all turned out great. Thanks for sharing the pictures. You all make me want to try making a mask one of these days.
  12. Brent, I'll be looking forward to seeing how you carve both of these patterns. I'm off to pour a load of cement this morning, and hopefully will be able to get out of there quickly enough to make it to Rapid City for Kathy Flanagan's class that starts this evening. I'm gonna have to recruit her and Bert to sit in on this room and see if they can settle you and Crystal down a bit.
  13. Your work is REALLY nice! I'm glad you joined our forum and will be looking forward to seeing more pictures of your work.
  14. Ok Crystal, there always has to be one in the class, and it's the one you least expect! Keep it up and you'll be sitting in the front row!
  15. Bert, aka Clay Miller, just let me know that he hasn't had internet service for some time now and doesn't know when it will be back up. So, that's why the delay in the monthly challenge for October. He asked if I could come up with something to fill in with. I've had a couple patterns laying around that I think some of you could have fun with, so I'll stick them both up here. The first is for all you skull carvers out there. After seeing all the cool things you guys and gals do with skulls, I just had to try some for myself. I found these drawings on the net, put them together and carved them. Of course I had to emboss them when I did it. As with all these patterns, feel free to do your own thing with them, knock out some teeth, add some flames or worms or whatever. The second pattern is a Sheridan style rose checkbook cover courtesy of Riley Cornelius. Riley is the son of Randy, a member here. He is a winner of the 2006 Ann Stohlman Award and a really nice kid. This pattern also appeared in the November 2007 issue of the Leather Crafters and Saddlers Journal. Thanks Riley for letting me use this.
  16. Jordan, You're not alone. Here's what we woke up to and it's still coming down.
  17. Seems there are differences in what we call things here in the US too. Out where I live, highways are most any paved road, not limited access and most often just one lane in each direction. Interstates are limited access, two lanes in each direction. We dont have freeways, toll roads, or expressways. And a LOT of our roads are just gravel. We have 8 miles of gravel to get to the nearest highway. We do like big trucks cuz we have a lot of stuff to haul around. The bigger the box and the cab, the more junk you can pile in there, tools, clothes, etc. It'd take about 15 minutes of cleaning if you wanted to get someone in the back seat of my Chevy. This was my favorite truck ever. 4 doors, 4 wheel drive (actually 6 since it was a dually) It hauled anything you could hook to it or stack on it. Wish I had a picture of it fully loaded when I ran a fencing crew. I finally decided to get rid of it when gas started going up. It had 225,000 miles on it and got about 3 mpg. Took the money I got from it and bought a Boss sewing machine. I liked the truck a lot better than I like the sewing machine. The Clint Eastwood movie, Every Which Way But Loose? My favorite Clint movie. He had one of those old slide in the box campers. Had one of those for the old truck too.
  18. I like this mask too. The overlapping pieces is a neat idea. And your coloring is great as always. If you would quit telling us when you mess up, nobody would ever know I hope your next attempt turns out like you want it to. Can't wait to see it.
  19. Ok Tina, you have to stop posting pictures! I already have two different purses to make for my wife, and now you show this. She loves this design! I haven't even had time to carve the last 2 patterns you drew up for me!! You know I'm kidding though, right? Everything you do inspires so many of us to try different things. The purse looks great. Clay
  20. There are probably several different ways you could achieve something close to this look. Another option would be to use something like the Sheridan style finsihing technique. Oil with pure neatsfoot oil, let dry to even out. Then when that's dry, you would probably dye the edges the dark color. Apply Neatlac (or some other resist) and let dry. Apply antique to bring out the impressions. Apply a finish.
  21. Hi Leathercat, Your leather cat turned out great! Glad to see something from you. We've missed you here. Clay
  22. Congrats Anne! That turned out great. I was wondering how it would look with the panels glued on the box, but your finishing touches really worked. I really like the corner panels and the lace. I know you put a LOT of work into this. It was fun watching the progress on it and finally seeing it all put together. Cant wait to see what you do with the inside. Clay
  23. Hi Marlon, I too want to thank you for sharing the pictures from this show. I know it takes a lot of time and patience to try and get pictures of all the entries and other things going on at a show and then get them up for the rest of us to see what we missed by not being able to be there in person. It is appreciated!!!
  24. Just in case some of you don't keep up with the calendar here on LW, I wanted to let you know about some upcoming leather classes taught by master leatherworkers. I have had the opportunity to experience most of these people teach in person and I know that you will learn a LOT if you attend any of these classes! Kathy Flanagan aka Yaklady will be teaching a class in Rapid City, SD on Oct 17-19. Her class will be carving, embossing, and painting a mountain scence as seen through a barn window. Jim Linnell will be in Norway the same days, Oct 17-19. His class will be carving and embossing on a flask cover. Pittpounders Leather Guild is trying to schedule a class with Paul Burnett on Oct 25th. His class will be on carving and coloring a Kestrel. Chan Geer is going to be in the Denver, CO area November 7-9 teaching a class on carving a Sheridan style notebook. For more info on any of these classes, check out the calendar here on Leatherworker for contact details. Also make sure to check back often to see what's coming up in the future. And, if you know of any upcoming classes or leather related events, be sure to add them to the calendar!
  25. Hi Scott, You did a great job of combining the shamrock into the mechanic theme. That's a cool design! The border is a great touch too.
