  8. Could not think of a better topic to put into the saddle section gallery. I make leather tools and have made a bouncer and mini bouncer for a saddle maker in the mid west. The customer ordered a set of bouncers that I make. One is a regular size bouncer and the other is a mini bouncer. I have inlayed a brass concho with the customers initals. M.H. I hope he likes it because he has not seen it yet. just emailed him. If you are intrested in a bouncer or a set I can make them for you and I think you will love the quality of work that I do. The large bouncer I sell for $70.00 and the small is $45.00. I charge $5.00 extra for putting you initals on the tools. If you do not want your initals I put my name as a maker mark. The wood is cocobolo with solid brass ferrules and porcelain heads. PM me if you want one or two or even three. l

  12. I have a couple of sets and are making more of some rub stacks. There is three pieces to this set. They are made of cocobolo. the first is 6" long and 3/16" thick with a round end and a pointed end. the middle one is made toi get into tight places. it is 5" long and 3/8"thick with a groove on one end and a point to get into tight places on the other. the last stick is like the first just that it is only 4 " long and fits into your palm real nice. I am selling the set for 40.00. Pm me and let me know if you want a set and I can invoice you from ebay. visit my web site to see other Items I have for sale. www.leathertools4u.com Gary
  13. JD I use a 1/4' steel rod cut 4" long. i find the center of my piece of wood and cut an x with my band saw . I drill out the center of the X with a 15/32 drill bit 3" deep. I do not use epoxy because i drill it just a tad small for the 1/4" rod.I then set it on the bench and with a sledge or hammer I pound it into the drilled out hole. If you want use some superglue gel. just a drop will do. I seat the rod and I place it on my lathe. I use a m1 3 jaw chuck and a live center chuck. I then turn my piece of wood on the side that i am puttig my ferrule on. I make my own ferrules out of compression fittings and turn them with a file on slow speed till i have filed it smooth I have 4 chisels That I use. I have made them the size I need to make my burnishers with. Once i have turned it I then use my cut off and almost cut thru it. I sand it and wax it on the lathe at high speed. I then cut thru and see if it wobbles if so i take it out of the lathe and see what side it is off on and place the metal rod in and bend it ever so slightly. I chuck it up again and turn it by hand to see if it is off. I so i repeat it again if not I turn the lathe on, on slow speed and with sand paper clean up the end. I then begin the finishing sanding . It is time consuming but well worth it. I do most out of cocobolo or bubinga wood now. If you have any more questions contact me. and I will explain more. Gary
  14. One left till I can make more. the one on the right is sold. Need one person to buy the other one. Gary
  15. I think I might have got it down ,finally. I have made three burnishers today. one was for a customer. strange how money will motivate a person. lol. I have got two left for sale. i will let them go for $30.00 each and that include shipping. first come first serve. They are made of cocobolo and one has a 1/4"shaft with solid brass ferrule and the other has a 5/16" shaft and it also has a solid brass ferrule. I have cocobolo wood on order. I was suppose toi get some this last weekend but the stuff the guy had was only 3/4" and to small for what i need . I will list it when the wood comes in. You can also vist my web site to see some of the tools I have for sale. It does need to be updated and will do so soon. Gary
  16. Justwakin. i have used powdered dyes on leather. I used a stiff brush to pounce the powder dyes into the leather and then use a spray sealer so that they would not come off. It makes for a very subtle color almost like water colors that have been washed or pastels. It does work ,don't get discourged. I have tried almost every thing to see if it works and i will be darned that it works almost every time. as for smoking leather ,the Native Americans have been doing it for thousands of years. it is part of the brain tan process to water proof the clothes. they would brain tan lets say an deer skin and then they would hang it after the brain tan process inside the top of the teepee or would wrap it around a frame and smoke it . It comes out very nice . the only problem Is that when I work with brain tan I get hungery for BBQ.Don't let anyone discourge you from trying something. It might not work but at least you tried it and can now say it did not or it did work. Keep up the good work and have fun with leather. Gary
  17. Zen If I was doing this I would use my swivel knife and the modified blade I made . I took a 3/8" straight blade and ground it down .then I used a file and made it rounded and buffed it till it was nice and smooth. I used a piece of scrap leather and the blade to show you. I would use a straight edge and the edge of a coffee can or a lid that is the same radius as the curve in the belt to get that radius. as for the gold part I am not sure. The only gold that I have used on leather to get that effect was gold or metal leaf .but it was only on a small part. if you have any questions contact me. Gary
  18. a collection of work by leather artist Gary Lyon
  19. From the album: Leather Creations by Gary

I made my first bouncer ,made of an antique porcelain knob and ziricote wood. It has a brass ferrule and a 3/8" all tread rod connecting the two. The rod goes three inch's into the handle . a very sturdy piece.
