ok well I've installed my leather belt and now the treadles foot will not hardly move, well it basically doesn't move with out using extreme force - then it wants to just go forward and backwards one revolution or just spins the wheel. Did I get it too tight? It does not feel "drum" tight by any means, I can get plenty of deflection when I try to (while handling the belt). I hope not I didn't get it too tight 'cause I've obviously already cut the belt ... if so is there a way of stretching it out ? I was worried about this kind of problem when I originally posted this thread, but it sounded pretty simple and there aren't any other threads I could find of folks having any problem like this. TIA.

The machine is green, has a small motor attached, I'd mostly be sewing garment leather, but same stuff as any old singer patcher I guess. Are the Adler's generally worth more than their Singer counterparts or about the same? Remember this one has no table, head only. thanks for your help. I'm affraid the initial pic isn't all that great, but here it is: Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Needle Not Picking Up Bobbin Thread After The First Loop

Needle Not Picking Up Bobbin Thread After The First Loop
CustomDoug replied to CustomDoug's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
Thanks for attempting to tackle my problem guys, I really appreciate it. Can ya'll please take a look at these pics and check that I have the thread routed correctly? One thing I noticed different than your above description (Wizcrafts) is that I can't see how the thread could travel in a clockwise direction around the (through) the disks as you suggested... well yes it can/does on the front tensioner (verticle) but not on the top tensioner (horizontal). At that location I have it going around the post then counter-clockwise before heading down to the other tensioner (see 1st & 2nd pics). The other differnce that I noticed is that you mentioned a spring that the thread goes through before it goes through the needle - but I have no spring there (see my 4th pic). BTW, the scarf of the needle is facing left (see 3rd pic). Uploaded with ImageShack.us Uploaded with ImageShack.us Uploaded with ImageShack.us Uploaded with ImageShack.us -
I'm having trouble with my Singer 29K machine. It will only pick up the bobbin thread on the first stitch. I only write this here after basically trying tension adjustments. Is there anything obvious that I should look at? The machine worked fine when it arrived to me (was already threaded top and bottom) - this problem came after I rethreaded it and retheaded a fresh bobbin. Sewing two layers of lambskin leather.

I have the opportunity to purchase an Adler 30-1 patcher sewing machine for around $350 (head only)... assuming it's in good shape, would that be a good purchase?

Stop Motion Plunger Not Stopping The Balance Wheel
CustomDoug replied to CustomDoug's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
Catskin you were right on... a little WD40 sprayed into the small holes around the inside of the wheel and it's working just fine now. - Thanks! -
I don't know maybe I'm doing something wrong but it seems easy enough. Singer 29K62.... manual says to pull the plunger knob out and turn slightly to the left or right. But that's not dissengaging the balance wheel from the needle bar and/or stopping the whole thing from moving as usual when the wheel is turned. I'm I missing something or is there a common part that wears out in this area?

Thread Weight 16/4 Cotton Is Equal To What ?
CustomDoug replied to CustomDoug's topic in Sewing Leather
OK well I just found a helpful chart on the enternet that shows 4 cord cotton thread size 16/4 needing a size 140 needle. I do have some 140/22 (not sure what the 22 refers to) so I guess those will work. Here's the link, looks pretty thorough to me, includes all types of thread material. http://www.industrialsewmachine.com/webdoc3/thread.htm#Chart 5 -
Hi guys I need to et some needles.... I want to use a glazed cotton thread in size "16/4" but I'm confused on what size needle would be best for that weight of thread as everything I read about thread for sewing leather is like "#69" or "#138" in nylon, etc. etc. I'm not sure why the glazed cotton is offered in a fractional number like 16/4... I thought that maybe it's a european form of thread weigh but then again this was what was used in the US for certain applications before being replaced with nylons etc. So - what needle would be recommended for 16/4 glazed cotton thread for sewing garment leather (I'd want a leather cutting tip). Thanks.

I have a Singer 29K62 that I'm about to start using, just waiting on a couple of items to show up first. I've ordered a treadle belt today and waiting for it. I have one bobbin in the machine and it looks small to me but have nothing else to compare it to. I just read that the 29K60 uses a large bobbin which was a surprise to me so I started second guessing which my "62" uses. Also, trying to figure out what else I may need right off the bat and came across a "Threading Wire" on ebay that one seller claims is necessary when using a class 29 machine... should I order one, and explain it's function if you don't mind. I can't figure it out - is it just an oversized loop threader like used on the small machines to get thread through the eye of the needle or what? Thanks ya'll.

Great - thanks for the tips. So, no special pliers or anything... for some reason I thought special pliers were needed. Anyway - can you tell me about which pulley on the machine I would want to measure for? The pictures I've seen of patchers on treadles usually have a leather belt around the larger of the two (on the head), my treadle base only has one wheel, it's apprx 12" across. So the head has one that measures 6" across and a smaller that's about 3.5" across. One is for speed and the other is better for power right? But which is which

OK I need to get a belt for my treadle machine and having never replaced one - am clueless.. help! I see ebay has the leather ones, but are they all the same? I'll have to reasearch it a little more but I remember seeing what seemed like huge rolls BUT I wouldn't need all that much (just one machine). How are the ends combined, etc. It'll be going on a singer patcher machine and the belt will need to be a little longer than usuall due to a custom table. Thanks ya'll.

My Patcher Needs A Table Or Treadle Base
CustomDoug replied to CustomDoug's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
OK, guys here's what I think I'm gonna do... I'm going to rig up a flat top for this standard treadle base that I've already bought and see if it's bearable long enough to get something welded up (yes Reaper I'd love to get some measurements and a scan if you can do it and it's not too much trouble). Then try to come up with some scratch to get one of those servo motors - they sound better the more I hear about them and now that I've actually worked an old treadle . Hey sewmun, you guys have a website?... I searched but didn't come up with one. -
It's great that it'll do what you need it to but if not you could have easily turned it to get your money back as you paid an average to good price. Anyway it's a great looking set up, good find. Look at it this way... keeping the gun would have cost you money in ammo and with the machine you can sell a couple of holsters and buy the gun again if you want.

My Patcher Needs A Table Or Treadle Base
CustomDoug replied to CustomDoug's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
Thanks ya'll, I just did some rough measurements - and the thing is... I'll be sitting way over to the left hand side of a standard/non-patcher singer treadle (picked one up cheap today). Not really a big deal I guess, but not ideal either. I will have to make the top atleast 9" out past the left side leg IF I plan to use one of the "29K's wooden flat-top table attachments" like is in reaper's link (thanks btw), but even that would need to be modified to work with the shorter drop with a flat table top as sewmun suggested. Sure wish I could locate an original, I do check craigslist all the time... maybe I'll expand my search to other cities. Any other suggestions ? -
I have a Singer 29K62 without anything to attach it to and work it from. Is there any reason a standard old (as in vintage) treadle will not work? I think the original bases for these machines are a little wider than the standard ones AND of course I would not have the original top which is unique to the 29 series machines. For a top I figured I'd cut out of (good, strong) wood the unique shape of the 29 series tops, attach it to a standard old treadle. Then to make it two levels (like the originals), build a raised area on the right side with some 2x4s and attach another top (on top of that). I assume there are no reproductions? Anyone got an extra original laying around? OR have a different idea - I'd be glad to hear it. Thanks for any help you can offer!

Because the historical contract that I'm working on calls for it. Can you please tell me where to obtain it.

thanks yall... yes I knew sides of horsehide would be hard to come by, but I am open to getting some from overseas too and was hopeing someone had sourced it there if nothing else. I am not seeing any at springfield's website, atleast no leather that's described as such... lots of their leathers do not mention what it's actually from. If anyone comes up with a place, let me know. Thanks again.
-
Does anyone know of a good source for garment horsehide leathers ? TIA.
-
yea, mines is a 29K62 and it looks all original to me but I guess it's possible that the pulley assembly isn't. I believe the large V-pulley is meant for speed and the small round pulley for strength. I don't mind the idea of a motor as long as it'll stitch fairly slowly when I want it to, maybe 3-4 stitches per sec.. Though ideally I'd prefer to mount a motor to the stand/base/table rather than drill holes in my machine. But I am open to it, what more can you tell me about the motor Bob? Got any pics of one mounted to a patcher? Thanks for checking the pulley sizes for me Kevin. I suppose any size will work, but I'd like to know what I'd end up with before spending the money. Kevin, is that a Singer patcher that's on your Adler treadle ? There seems to be a greater abundance of the 12.5" flywheels (from my very short search), any ideas what that'll do to my speed and strength when used with my round grooved pulley? Thanks you guys!
-
I got a patcher last week that has no base, treadle and table. So I need to get something - either a treadle or motorized table for it so I'm not tied to just hand motion. I figured since the (singer) treadles for patchers are few an far between that I would use another singer treadle, a short one obviously. They are easier to find but should I look for a certain one ? My machine has a v-belt pulley and a 'round leather belt' pulley - the v-pulley being the larger of the two. So, are there options when it comes to what wheel size I should look for in a treadle base? Speed is not really my first priority but power to get through several layers of garment leathers is. I figured that I'd rig up an offset top for the head to sit on because of the design of the patchers, and also rig up an extention for the height of the right side. Any suggestions ? TIA.

I am looking for snaps, I guess what I'm wanting is the Line 24 snaps... like close the bottom of jackets, etc. Besides needing high quality, I need them in colors such as brown, russet, greens, black, blues, etc. The unpainted parts would be nice in brass but that's a secondary issue really. These things are sold in like 4 seperate pieces right? I mean what are the individual items that I will be needing, besides the colored caps? thanks for any info on a good supplier and whatever else.

Snowman, did you ever get the issues figured out and fixed... or were you serious about getting rid of the machine, I may be in the market. ~customdoug
