Take-Up Lever Tension And Travel
CustomDoug replied to CustomDoug's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
OK (on a totally new-to-you machine) would you normally make the basic thread adjustments first (top thread and bobbin) to position the lockstitch in between the material, then adjust the take up lever while considering the thickness of material? -
I'm on my second SInger long arm patcher, and the first one was set up pretty much right with regards to the take-up lever so I never did mess with it much, if at all (didn't have it long). I didn't want to mess with adjusting it and risk messing something up. So now that I have my latest one (it's a 29k60 big bobbin) I want to understand the whole take-up lever thing. I understand how to make the adjustments, but when and why is a bit of a mystery. This info may have been in the printed manual that I gave away with my other machine when I sold it... I probably could use a manual for this machine too if anyone knows of a PDF somewhere? Any insight is appreciated. TIA.

I've PM'd 'Double E' more than once a few weeks back about the baby bull... never got a reply. You might try making the long distance call. I felt that was impractical for a shipping quote. Good luck.

ah, "I see" said the blind man.

haha... it's just that it takes me a while to wrap my head around statements like this (for instance) - "One type of outer foot that is experimental is a single-center toe, behind the inside foot." These things make since after I read 'em a few times.
-
Wow Wiz, what can I say.... will take me a while to digest this info, very concise as usual. Don't think it's not appreciated, it is. I'm off to read it again..

OK, so sounds like a "piping foot" and a "welting foot" are essentially the same thing. Sounds too like the way to go on the piping itself, then I suppose a zipper foot for sandwiching the piping in between a seem, probably? I'll put some thought into which zipper foot side (left/right) would be most beneficial - I think "right side" taking into account the bulk of the material laying on the table. BTW, I do check youtube sometimes, but always seem to get sidetracked.

Are there any good videos somewhere or good explanations or attachments for these machines? I need to sew some piping but I'm confused by all the different feet - there are welting feet, double welting feet, piping, zipper feet, edge guide foot, tape binders, etc... then there are smooth feet, etc too. It's kind of dizzying . Is there one type of foot that would kill two birds, for instance maybe a zipper foot could be used to also sew cord piping? Is a left and a right usually even necessary, seems like not... but again I'm a bit confused.

I'm selling the Stitching Pony I made using Al Stohlman's directions, from his hand stitching book. It's good and sturdy, made using wood glue and screws. You set the rear of it on a chair so it's pretty versatile and portable that way. Works well. Asking $50 cash, located in Dallas TX for pickup.

Thanks Gregg, my machine has no number after the RB... so I assume it's first generation (1), say's made in Japan. I'll take a look at that download and let you know if another book would be needed, thanks again.

What factors would necessitate a choice between the 135X15 and 135x16 needles? I have plenty of the x16s in sizes below your above recommendations but none in the x15s. I will grab some of both (if need be) in the #22 & #23 sizes. Also, are there smooth needle plates and single thin feed dogs on the market for these machines (like I put on my 31-15)?
-
OK looks like the needle system 135x16 (and/or x17) I use for my Singer 29K60 will work for the 206RB, now that's convenient. Still need to figure out what the largest size would be though...I'm thinking #22 with 138 thread?
-
I picked up a Consew 206RB about a week ago and only got the one needle in it and no user's manual. Haven't used it yet, except when testing it before buying. What needle system do they work with and what are the largest needle and tread they're comfortable consistantly running? What max leather thickness to expect it to sew? Also, are there any free or at least reasonable online manuals available? thanks.

Does GH Leathers have a website, I searched the name but didn't see anything?

Thanks Scary, I'll contact them for samples and pricing - appreciate it!

Sold. Mods please delete this add, if you don't mind.

I just put my Singer 29K62 patcher on craigslist, it's in good shape and located in Dallas, TX. I'm not looking to crate it up and ship it but may consider delivery within Texas (depending where) for a fee. I can send specific pics if you need and there are a couple in my craigslist add here: http://dallas.craigs...2631190995.html , $400.

You know I'm just assuming the one I was looking at was the Douglas piece but it might have been Vandy's ... or is her's strictly a pony design as opposed to table mount? Sheridan's website looks great in my opinion though I think it must still be a work in progress. I first thought it was missing the usual catagories that you'd expect until I clicked on "our leather philosophy", oh there's the tools section but then it's empty when I click on it. It's not a problem I know websites can take some time. I just found the number to call for a catalog and will do that tomorrow. I gotta mention, they are a really friendly group of people from what I saw this weekend.

...I don't want to hear anyone say France either
-
I'm looking for sources of "French Calfskin", please post if you know of sellers. I came across one vendor at a trade show that was actually kind of condescending (if not a little rude) and seemed to try to steer me away from it. I didn't bother to grab his card but I wish I'd remembered his company name at least. thanks.

Has anyone here purchased one of the table mounted stitching pony/clamps that are currently being advertised at the top of this forum? I keep following the link and can not find the tool. I had not considered replacing my Al Stohlman style stitching pony until this weekend... but why should I, it's nice and I'm proud of the fact that I put it together, etc. But after seeing the Douglas Tool one this past weekend (at the Wichita Falls show) and continually being drawn back to them like a magnet - I'm wanting one. Are there any other's who make such a nice table mounted third hand?

That SewPro 500gr uses only 300watts of power... so that's not even 1/2 hp, right ? Or what HP rating is it? Also, why would I choose a 3/4 hp servo over a 1/2 hp servo? Will the 1/2 hp motor not have enough torq to consistantly pierce extra thick leather layers (over 3/4") ?
-
Ah Darn it ! ... of course it is advertised as a leather sewing machine (aren't they all). I know darning is done on saddle blankets and stuff, but perhaps there's also a need for it on leather items too - I don't know. Like I mentioned before, I read that someone converted a 45K58 (another darning model) to include feed dogs using stock Singer parts but I don't think I want to bother, regardless of price. thanks
-
Anyone have a Singer 45K76 cylinder arm machine? I can't find a dang thing on this particular model. What kind of feed system does it use? What's the presser foot max lift or greatest leather thickness it'll sew? I did find info on the 45K58 which is apparently a darning machine and therefore relies on the operator to manually feed the material (but can be converted to include feed dogs) - so question is, does the 45K76 have a feed system to begin with? etc, etc.. thanks.
